Escudo/Vitara engine differences

I've posted this elsewhere but as I need the info in a bit of a hurry I will post it here too. I'm really struggling to find power and torque figures for the different variations of Escudo/Vitara 1600cc 16 valve engines.

Question:

I've had a search (here, google, wiki, outerlimits, pirate etc.) and I can't find any decent info on the difference between the escudo/vitara 16valve single point injected motor and the 16valve multi-point injected motor.

I have been offered a 16valve SPI G16A engine, but don't want to buy it if it's not going to produce the power of the MPI engine. I would prefer to hold out for the right engine.

Does anyone have specs/info/links on the differences between the SPI and MPI 16valve engines? any info before monday would be great (when I may be going to look at the engine.) Thanks in advance :)

Firstly the SPI engine is only an 8 valve engine , not 16v .
The three engine options in the first gen vitaras were all 1600cc , 8 valve carbed , 8 valve single point injection and 16 valve multi point injection .

The 8 valve engines share the same intake and exhaust pattern as a 413 engine . I did have figures somewhere of what the different engines put out but it was ony off the web so its accuracy is always in question . The general concensus is that the 8v SPI engine has a little bit more torque but the 16v have more power but further up the rev range .

As far as I know its only the 16v heads that have the habbit of cracking . Another internet "fact " is some people think the 8v spi computer can handle low boost , yet to find out :) .

If you found a good 8v spi I would look at it , in my opinion could be a better bet in the long run .

As Chris says there are three versions: 8 valve carbed, 8 valve singlepoint injected, and 16 valve multpoint inected. They all have different benifits.

Carbed is about 115Nm & 70hp. They are a really easy install in a SJ / Samurai, as there's no wiring to worry about, but have worst power.

8 valve single point (TBI) injected has about 135nm and 77hp. They run great with EFI, and make lots of off idle and low end torque, great for offroad.

16 valve multipoint (MPFI) is about 130nm and 100hp. They go really well on road, just not quite as nice offroad due to less low end toqrue.

Any other questions about the conversion let me know. I make the adaptor kits to fit these engines.

I have also heard a rumour that there is a cam grind/change avaliable for the 16v to make it better low end torque wise.

All good info so far, but be aware that the 8-valve heads ARE just as prone to failure as the 16-valve heads. Not necessarily always cracking, but warping and blowing head-gaskets is also common. Hence the recommendation that the first mod is to fit extractors, reducing the heat-stress that seems to cause all the trouble. Once extractors are on, the head problems vitually disappear.

I run two of the 8-valves myself and have had experience of the head issues!

Thanks guys :) that's great info :D

Another question I couldn't find an answer to online: Do parts swap between the G16A and G16B engines? i.e. could I swap a 16valve head off of a G16A onto an G16B block that formerly had a 8valve head on it? What are the differences between the G16A and G16B engines?

It may not seem like it but all this info is helping me in the buying process :)
