tyres sticking out

Post by cruiser_beast »

I dont know the exact rules about tyres and flares but......I failed my warrent once because i had tyres sticking out past the gaurds. All i had to do was put my strips of rubber back on as flares and all was fine.

The legal requirement is that the RIM does not stick out past the guard, the tyre can stick out as much as you like, if you get queried on it get them to show you the ruling in their book.

This one to new to me, I was always led to believe that if any tread sticks out then it is not warrantable.
If tread does stick out, and you need flares to cover it, you need a cert.

This was directly from the LTSA. :?

We have had this argument many times with our local idiotic VTNZ branch, I'm in the business of selling wheels tyres etc. According to the ruling we found it is the rim that matters.

If the rim is sticking out, if it because the rim is a different offset you then get into another set of rulings, gets messy, generally though, just get a set of Bushranger rubber flares, come in two widths, 25mm or 50mm I think. They are dead easy to fit and you should be sweet, no cert needed.

The last set I got was from my local Repco store, cost was around $130 I think, enough to do all four wheel arches on my Safari.

The bushranger ones will only do the front two or the rear two arches per box - go to Para Rubber and buy some thick rubber strap or conveyor belt rubber - waaay cheaper

I can get those bushranger flares cheaper that retail, but I think the cheaper option will probably suit you better.

Have used plastic garden edging also - Real cheap (looks it too), but it works.

Dak,
how do you get on for larger tyres then?
I have been told that anything over 5% increase in diameter requires a cert. but run 33's on the GQ and havent been questioned......yet.
