I just purchased a 5m engine and w58 bellhousing.
Now I need to find something to put it in.

I am looking for a hilux surf (not ute or dual cab) with live front axle.
What year/specific models do I need to be looking for?

I'll be picking everyones brains here til I get it done so I hope no one minds too much..

Cheers Caine

Solid axle surfs were either 3Y 2-litre petrol or 2L 2.4-litre diesel in '84 and '85 only.

Still getting $2-4k since they are so sought after by nutters like us

alternatively you could get a 5-door surf for the same money with a blown 2LT motor and put it in that - nicer option.

Start with a diesel truck, all the stuff is in the right place - mine was petrol and it was a pain... had to get heaps of diesel bits

Sorry... Just to clarify.
The 5 door surfs you are talking about are they generally any year with beam axle?

So even though the 5m is petrol it is easier to fit to a diesel truck?
Will I need to replace the petrol tank going from diesel to petrol or can I just get it cleaned out?

No, you'd need to SAS a 5-door. Only 3-doors 84-85 had the solid axle.
The Supra motor needs a drivers side exhaust and a pass side clutch slave for starters - which the diesel hiluxes have - petrols are ass about face. Also the fuel lines come into the engine bay in the right place on a diesel - they're all no the wrong side in the petrol... Nothing to do with the fuel type of the motor, just the configuration of the engine bay.

Just remove the tank, remove the fuel level sender and tip it all out, then put at least 20-30 litres of fresh petrol in to dilute what ever is left. Otherwise smokey running and blocked injectors and shit...

OK... Some more questions
Broadening my options as I don't really want to go through an SAS.
What year model dual and single cabs should I be looking for?
Thanks

WELL .sorry to burst the bubble here guys ..  . BUT you can fit a 5M-GE in to a 4 door surf with out doing the SAS thing ( trust me i have seen it done in TIMARU . the first guy that helped me wire up my first 5m .but sadly he has moved to the UK but i am pretty sure all he did was fit the engine in with out the sump and oil pump and then changed the oil pick up and made a new sump to suit his application IT CANT BE THAT HARD AS THIS GUY WAS ONLY A PAPER PUSHER BUT HE HAD A DREAM AND MADE IT HAPPEN ......

It's not so much that the engine conversion can't be done, it's that I have a list of things I want to do to the 4x4 (when I get it) and I wanted the beam axle without having to do the SAS conversion.
I have about 8K budgeted for this project (Doesn't include the engine and bellhousing which I already have... OK so I might have put the horse before the cart here  )

I just want make sure I get the right pieces for my puzzle to start with.

Anyway can the conversion be done in single/dual cabs and what years should I be looking for?

Thanks guys

single and double cabs, alot of them are beam to start with,
think about this though,
Pick up a 90 surf with a blown motor-$1000
SAS it 3-4000
5 grand and you have a beam axel 90 surf.

To actually answer the question, NZ new Hilux utes changed to IFS in '96 and the 5MG should (will) fit anything with a solid axle.

Steve

PS: Probably your best bet will be an LN106 with mega-km's on it - should get something for $6-7k - or even look for one with a blown motor - although they are rare.
