Possible Project for a beginner

Post by Bubba »

Well I have come accross a possible project but have to admitt to being a real novice at this. It a rusty old LWB LandCrusier, about 1990 vintage, half worn muddies, Diesel , Bullbars , winch. snorkel, It's been parked up and is not road worthy.

Again I am a real novice but this thing appeals to me, my father had one a few years ago and it was a great wagen. Just thought it would be great for those trips that the shinny isn't going to cut it.

Throw a few things my ways, questions, answers, possible price, likely problems......

I'm not looking at making it road worthy, just fun worthy

Oh yeah, it's yellow/light brown (see "Project lemon")

is it normally aspirated or turboed and what size engine is it

the only hassle i can see is it is a long wheel base so won't have as good a turning circle and may get hung up a bit easier but to be honest as a starting point why the hell not if you want to change that you can always do it later especially if you are only using it off road no cert to worry about

 tempting fate :D

If its been parked up for a while cheak the chassi, use a small ball pen hammer and don't be shy it should be strong enough to handle any thing you can do with a small hammer pay specail attention to any areas at the bottom of bends (these trap mud and water :( ) also around the area under the battery
If theres a few "soft" spots don't panic just weld a plate over them  its not like its going to be used on road
Next it the breaks go over all your flexy lines   trust me there is nothing like that adrenaline rush you get from trying to make that corner alot faster than you intended becouse your brakes didn't work
The rest is sweet if you can stop and you know its not going to fold up round you

It's N/A I think. I was talkin to Mike last night and we came up with the conclusion that it will have to be road worthy to get from A to B. To many bloody tax collectors (cops) around here. As long as the chassis is ok and the main functions work, and I can get it right for the right price I will look into it. Lots of cutting of panels and I haven't touched a weilder for 15 years. But I guess thats what projects are for

I'm going back to have a look tomorrow.

(side comment) When I approached the Mrs about maybe buying a clapped out, rusted out shitter so I can go trash it she thought it was a good idea. I'm not used to her agreeing with me.

Well me and Mike had a look and decided that it's knacked, looks like it's been dipped in the tide a few times. pity cause it would have been friggen cool.

Anyway, anybody looking for a LandCruiser snokel, winch/PTO, bullbars give me a holla and I will see what I can do

Where abouts is it I might come on down and grab it if he's going to dump it

I'm looking at putting a cruiser box behind the lexus motor I've got sitting here and throwing it in the pajero, depending on fit :? got limited room in the wee truck  I'm also looking into using some bits of cruiser axles for a modified independent syspension

Wasn't plaining on doing all this for a while but if its there 8)

I'm still thinking on grabbing the whole thing as I want the wheels and maybe the snokel for myself.

What I might do is, get it for parts, strip it, swap parts for beer, sell other parts to recover any costs. Dump it

Have to talk to my mate about using his back yard to keep it in

Oh yeah seen that, Need photo's bud, PM a starting price, see if we are in the same park as you may be in the Westapc Traust Stadium (Cake tin) and I am in the Cannons Creal Rec grounds. If you know Wellington then you know the difference. If not use your Imagination.

Well I talked tot he guy today, he moved it closer to his land fill area. He was dead keen for it to go to a good home, even in parts. He said that if it can be stripped of parts quickley he will remove the remains, crush it and bury it. 8)

Now the bad news........

He wants $1500 for it :o :(

I nearly deposited me weetbix on his boots :pukel:

I can't see how it will now be financially viable now

He reckons the PTO is worth that by it's self

Reece, as you wanted the most parts from it, tell me if you can think a way round this otherwise it can sit there for another three years.

Funny how one day he's talking about just dumping it and the next (as soon as somebody is interested) the $$$ signs appear in his eyes

 he's a dreamer, if he went to the trouble of stripping it and it was in good working order, not sitting for that length of time he might get $500...

Tell him $500 thats more than the wreakers would pay, if he's not interested landfill here it comes  theres plenty more wreaks out there!!

Sounds like hes deranged

  good one

 Don't worry dude I happen to live just below the fabbled 4WD and V8 graveyard.... "The East Coast..."

I'm also lucky enough to have a mate who is a roadside mower so he gets to see all of these old wreaks on his travels :D all you need is a box of piss and a friendly smile and most of the locals are quite happy to let ya grab what ever you want
I've got an 70 series SWB thats only an hour from home... the only reason I haven't grabed it is couse its parked in his pig pen as a sty!! thats why I'm willing to cough the $500 8)

Let us know if he's willing to take the $500  otherwise it might be time to get dirty

Thanks for the trouble anyway  when we catch up I'll shout ya a woody
