Cam Belts & Dirt

Post by NJV6 »

Has anyone tried either successfully or not to seal up the front timing covers?

Having had a weekend which included dirty deep water holes, out of interest I took one of the top timing covers off and was amazed at the amount of dirt in there.

And I can bet this does no favours to cam belt life.

Most covers have rubber seals sealing it from factory if these are stuffed you may be able to get replacements, youl never fully seal it tho as crank has to exit cover at bottom on most engines but your right it wouldnt do cambelt or any other moving parts any favours - may mean keeping eye on it and replacing more often than you would if just using it for road use only.
Put a commie motor in - chain drive :D

Yes the rubber seals are there, but like you say, there is a hole where the crank pully comes through.

And there is no way i'd be replacing the motor with a vintage car one!!
