88 Surf + 6mgte, the ugly couple

Post by stoneym »

Hey there guys, I got my non turbo 6m motor this morning and I'm about to get stuck into the rebuild.
I have a 5m Surf on Lpg with lockrite locker and 33's which has been doing the job just fine, but as usuall we all need more that what we have so I aim to rebuild and turbo the 6m with 7m components. 3.0L turbo six YEEHA!
The build will probably take me through the first 4 months of 09' because I have other plans for the truck in the mean time.
- Second LPG tank
- New canopy
- Mudders?
- and some interior bits need a tidy up.

Here are some pictures of the fresh addition to the family.

And heres the truck its going to be motivating

A little side project I'm building. 'The Super Snorkle'

It pumps air down 40' hoses to a regulator so you can breathe easy underwater. Just finished, yet to be tested.

Any advice or questions is much appreciated - Colin

Your going to use that compressor for an air supply for diving ?????, please tell me I've missed something, please give more details and photos. All I see is a petrol engine with exhaust pipe and a air cleaner ( that looks like standard paper element type ) that are far to close together . If I am totally wrong please except my apologies, If in fact I am close to the mark DON'T USE IT. This is not being said to get into a shit fight just a very concerned ORE brother.

Thanks for your concern mate but its all thought out... I think.
The motor is driving a oiless 2 cylinder Gast compressor with the belt drive (safe to breathe what it pumps out as long as its clean)
The air cleaner is sitting on the intake pipe for the compressor. the compressor hooks up to two 40' hoses with dacor scuba regs, which clip onto your wieght belt. the whole unit is light enough to be bolted in a plastic frame inside a truck tire inner tube floating on the surface or bolted to a wood bracket inside the boat.
The problem of the intake and exhaust being too close together is taken care of by running a hose off the intake pipe and remotely locating it.
We will be testing it out a bit first in shallow waters too.
If you know anybody in TGA MT area who needs the bottom of their boat scrubbed without a haul out im now your man.

Stoneym, thanks for giving me some more information. In the past I have done services on the dive compressor where I work, my memory is a bit rusty now but the compressor was fitted with charcoal air filtration filters , what I don't remember is If they where on the inlet or outlet sides of the compressor. I know that I have had some whopping head aches from contaminated air and that has been out of commercial filled tanks, you can't be to careful with your air filters.
The first sign you get that things are not right get to the top.

Thanks mate, yeah the charcoal filters go on the exhaust side of compressor, I went to the good fellas down at Ash Air and had them talk me through any recommendations. As long as I seperate the engine exhaust and compressor intake by a bit of distance I should be fine, the particle filter is to stop me being killed by some genuis bee finding that hose and getting sucked into the air lines.
Gonna build a wooden frame for it today and give it a quick test.

I juat put a 6m in my truck, i didnt have the electronics for the 6m, so I just swapped over the 5m distributor, air bypass under the manifold, drilled a hole in the 6m manifold to fit one of the air pipes that goto the bypass, and tapped in the idle up into the top of the manifold, also swap the 5m throttle body onto the 6m manifold - the 6m manifold has D shaped ports and my 5m had circle ports. Goes very very well non turbo - looked into turboing it a little bit myself, but is enough for now. I think some people overseas use 5m pistons to lower compression?

Thanks for that info mate, I'll be storing that post away for later.
Appearantly these engines are not the best at delivering oil when turboed, 7m pumps and pickups i guess.

Finally got it all sorted, i think.
Next weekend the family mech is letting me use his space and helping me out with the swap.
Going non turbo for now but still looking at it for the near future.

Really don't know anything about this process so if anybody has anymore advice like scs then please feel free to post it here.
I'll take some pictures for you guys.. i know how hungry you get.
Cheers!
