hi there,
i have a lockright in the front of my ln65, heard a crunch one day and as a result only had drive to one wheel. was a while ago now and have just got round to looking into it.
I hoisted the truck up, locked the hub on one wheel and turned it - was fine. Locked the other wheel and turned it - fine. Also turned the driveshaft flange which also felt fine. Then i locked both wheels, turned one and hello, clicking coming from inside the diff housing. It appears to me that the mechanism is ratcheting under very minimal load, its been awhile since I put it in, but I think the problem would be those pins and springs that go between the two gears? If my assumption is correct, where can I obtain new pins and springs in the christchurch region. Funny that they broke, I was travelling in a straight line and the locker wasnt any older than a few trips.
Any help appreciated - cheers
lockright slipping?
Re: lockright slipping?
Ratcheting under light load is normal as are the clicks from the diff head, I'd say you have a broken hub or birfield.
Jack the truck up (on axle stands
) with both hubs locked turn the drive shaft by hand if one wheel doesnt turn start pulling that side apart untill you find the broken part!!

Re: lockright slipping?
both wheels turn, just stop when the noises start lol... but yea - thats what I originally suspected, but wierd how both wheels can still turn the diff.. I know noises are usual, havent noticed them before spinning the wheels when off the ground.. the noises coming from the diff definately arent normal and are pretty constant - I'll soon find out however
Re: lockright slipping?
The ratcheting sound is normal from a lock right if one wheel is off the ground and you spin it by hand.

Re: lockright slipping?
It all sounds normal to me are you sure something is broken?
How do you know it was only driving one wheel after the "crunch"?
every now and then i get a loud crunch from mine, its just the plates meshing under force. it doesnt happen often and is bloody loud when it does.

Re: lockright slipping?
Only one way to be sure
.
pull it down and have a look.
You may have also broken the pins that line the lockright up. Drain the oil and see what goodies come out.

Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!
