80 wont rev "HELP"

Post by skid »

as the title suggests, my 80 wont rev past 1500rpm

my flatmate is borrowing it and just rung me up to ask wot problem is

I dont know, I'm not a diesel mechanic

told him to pop bonnet and pump the diesel primer thingy but he said it was stuck down and wouldn't budge even when motor was off

told him to crack the fuel cap coz it always releases some air at every fill

he did that and it revved out once or twice but is now back to not revving again

any suggestions

HAVE TO GO RESCUE AND TOW IT HOME NOW

allright then

got it home and went straight to the pump thingy on top of the fuel filter, it was stuck down and not releasing at all.

released the hose coming out of the filter/pump and a little air hissed but faark all really, but pump not release.

so released hose coming into filter/pump and a little more air hissed and hey presto, the pump thingy released.

so put incoming hose back on and primed pump thingy and then put outgoing hose thingy on and wouldn't ya know it, the 80 revs again

so wot I wanna know is why did the pump thing suck down killing the motor effectively

it seems to me to be an air lock problem somewhere,

but where

the only thing I can think of is the fuel cap was once modified to fit my old 40 and then re-modified to re-fit the 80

where does the tank vent, is it thru the cap???

sounds like a fuel blockage in the feed line to filter, or filter is clogged, dissconnect the line going into the filter and blow it back to tank with a air gun, check to see if fuel filter is "clean" not blooked with sludge or crap, failnig that dont lend to the flat mate :)

check fuel line for crease or fold in hose, maybe when you took the 80 off road once before (you have had it off road??) it got a stick where a stick should not go, if it was the the fuel cap locking up due to vacuum in tank it would take a while to use sufficent fuel to cause issues, how ever if it does it again, remove cap without turning engine off and see if it fixesthe problem

Cheers

tried that and it didn't work

when softy rang I told him to crack the cap and see if it fixed it and it didn't

sorry I lied, it fixed it for a couple of revs and then it was faaarking piss again

Allright then.

I've just realised this is probably the same question as the last one I asked a while back when it happened once before.

Last time half of ya mentioned the dreaded diesel bug

so what exactly is this bug and how does it affect your system ??????

Ok, so last time you guys thought it was that and I changed the filter only to find the old filter relatively spotless, clean as.

I'n not an expert but I'll give it a go based on my very limited knowledge.

Is there a filter in the tank on the fuel pickup? If yes it may be blocked.

The pump locking down would (I think) be caused by a lack of fuel flow creating a vacuum in the line or a lack of air flow creating a vacuum in the tank (if it was a blockage the other side of the pump it would be pushed all the way out) . Can you run a temp fuel line from the tank to the pump to rule out the fixed line?

Just had a thought (someone before mentioned it also) Trace the fuel lines (from / to) and check they haven't been crimped by a rock or something simillar (not that that would increase the vacuum in the tank but good to rule out). any soft lines if they are too long or short may have a sharp bend where they go around something causing the pipe to collapse when a vaccum is created, pulling them closed further. Could be the hoses have gone soft or are breaking down inside, so maybe some replacement hoses would be a start also.

Has the lift pump got a hole in the diaphram and is pressurising on the other side hence it locked down tight?

Is there a drain to the tank? If yes, drain some fuel out and see what else come out with it, might be bug or might be the tank lining / rust breaking down and blocking things.

Hope my ramblings help.

so I clambered underneath and followed the lines, they are fine, not bashed or crimped in any way. Mr Toyota did a good job of hiding those up nice and high outta the way.

took filter apart, its spotless

took bung out and drained about 1.5 litres into a nice clean container, the diesel is clean and spotless.

blasted compressed air back down line from filter and could hear it bubbling in tank, so its free and flowing.

NOW WOT

I would guess lift pump next (working along the system). Does it have a blockage or a ruptured diaphram? I dont suppose there is a gause filter in the lift pump inlet?

Dont know, I'm just guessing.

This is a good one!!!!!

Bear in mind, that the hand pump ontop of the filter is Nothing More Than A Hand Operated Primer, And Will Not Affect the Engine Whether Its Faulty Or Not.

So right at the startof the thread you said that you released the fuel line from the tank to the primer and you heard a rush of air?? Then the primer handle returned to the top of its stroke??

That would 100% indicate that there is an obstruction in the fuel line.

Why??

Because as you push the handle down on the primer, it pushes the fuel out of the filter toward the injector pump. As the handle comes back up it draws the fuel out of the tank. If the handle won't eturn to the top, it means it can't draw fuel out of the tank. That also rules out air leaks in the fuel line aswell :D

So you have blasted compressed air through the line??? Have you tried it since??

I will go and get my work shop manual, but im 99% sure the 80 series has a remote breather and a non-return valve at the end of the breather line. The non return valves block up causing these sort of symptoms.

Have you taken it for a really good strop with the fuel cap off??

If you lift up the carpet in the back of the truck, you will see a little flap on the floor that unbolts. If yo undo that and remove it, you can pull the pick up for the fuel tank out through the hole and visually inspect it. Could be a fine gauze filter on the end thats the clogged. Probably not though.

Hmmmm

That was my understanding of the system also. Something on the supply side of the hand pump is restricting fuel flow. My guess about the diaphram is just clutching at straws really as I have never worked on that type of system.

Hi Skid, if you are suspicious of the tank/fuel filter, get a 4lt; container a length of fuel hose and connect it straight to the lift pump, the return will still use the original system. I am not that familiar with the 80 series injector pump or fuel system but it is not that uncommon to have fine gauze filters fitted inside fuel line banjo bolts and where the fuel line enters the injector pump. If I get time tomorrow I will give my Diesel Pump service man a call. There won't be to much wrong with it,

IT'S A TOYOTA,

FITZY.
