I broke a CV in my SAS'd surf on the weekend and being the silly bugger i am i decided i would fix it myself, So i pulled the wheel off and after a bit of a struggle and a couple of cold ones managed to get the hub off, Unfortunately as soon as the hub came off out fell all the CV bearings, some nasty broken chunks of metal, the bearing the hub swivels on fell to pieces and it all ended up as a big mess on my driveway as It all kinda fell out in a big mess I didn't get to see how it was supposed to sit so cant put it back together.
So I need to get a new CV made up which shouldn't be a problem but i need to know what the bearings that the hub swivels on are called so i can buy a new set and how to install them
I need a new oil seal for the axle
and i need to get a new wheel bearing kit
The bits of metal scored the inside of the hub pretty bad this will need to be fixed, will post pics tomorrow so you can tell me if this will be a major problem.
Can someone please point me in the direction of a diagram that shows how it all goes together and possibly give me some instructions.
Or would someone be willing to help me get it back together in exchange for a few cold ones . I really want to learn how to do this stuff myself
P.S the front axle is out of and old beam axle surf (LN60?)

kingpin bearings are the ones that hold te swivel hub any hilux or up two 70series cruiser cvs will fit

All that should have come out is the bits of broken CV, large balls about the size of marbles and the broken CV housing?

There shouldnt be anything wrong with your wheel bearings and swivel bearings once you clean all the old CV shrapnel out?

Thanks for the offer Matt but i managed to download a service manual so have managed to get my head round it. The problem was after listening to some not too good advice I ended up removing the whole steering knuckle instead of just the hub, And as i have the whole thing in pieces I will replace all the bearings.
Now the only problem is how do i get the kingpin bearings inner race off the steering arm and bearing cap, they are suck on there pretty good?

you have to punch them out

should be two notchs machined in to the casting , clean the inside out of grease should be able to see them long steel punch required and a hammer

sorry might have called bearings by wrong name, I meant these. the only way I can think of is putting them in a vise, heating up the bearing then smacking them off but I don't have a vice

I would not like to see lack of knowlege create disaster on the road to yourself,or others

If I wasn't confident i could put it back together safely I would just pay someone to do it.I also now have a service manual so understand how it comes apart and have step by step instructions on how to put it back together correctly right down to checking the bearing preload. And if im not happy with the result at the end it will be taken to a mechanic to be checked/repaired. I am trying to learn new skills and we all have to start somewhere.

thats the way i knew nothing of cv joints or toyotas preloads ect till this 40 arrived

lol, i had that happen to me, I think I pryed them off with a balljoint splitter

Those king pin bearings are usually just a neat fit and you can slide them on with your hand. I would say it sounds like they must have rusted on.
A little heat or a cut straight down the side with a cut-off disc will do the trick.

A grease nipple fitted on the top helps

thanks for that Richard the grease nipple idea is a good one, I managed to get them off by tapping a blade of a knife into the join then they levered off ok

Up and running as of last night, had a few wee problems like being sold a landcruiser CV that wouldn't fit so had to take it back and exchange it for the right one and then when I wanted to take it for a test drive she wouldn't start, so had to pull out the starter motor and fix up the solenoid but she's all good now.
