is this or is this not a myth about 4.2 GQ.

Are some 12 volt 4.2 diesel GQ patrols run via an ecu? therefore not allowing an after market turbo to be fitted very easily?? i have an ecu (i think) behind and below where the radio sits. i am told very few ran an ecu but some did. Can someone shed some light on this for me as i am looking at getting a turbo.

thanks

Hey
I have two service manuals and one has no mention of an ECU. The other does. It doesn't seem to specify which models, years etc but it covers removal and refitting of it along with other on board diagnostic info. Its supposed to be located "behind the passenger side kick panel" apparently. I have a downloadable version of the manual if you want it but yeah theres a reasonable section on emissions and engine control systems.

Doug...

It wont effect you fitting a turbo,my friend has a 24v model which has a ecu in left side kick panel, ecu didnt work for several years till he found it was stuffed and replaced it,run alittle smoother with new ecu but had no real power gain.
turbo being fitted soon.

I haven't played with the ecu but from knowing a fair bit about the TD42 I would assume that the ecu is to do with emission control and exhuast gas reticulation. So you should be able to completely pypass it. I have a 96 TD42T that I have disabled the EGR and increased boost fuel etc on, and apart from making it go a lot better without effecting the economy, there weren't any problems. I did have to remove the factory over boost valve as that would just pop open when you put your foot down. But that was a simple take it out and replce with a pipe fitting to blank the hole.

Do you have a lot of small vacum lines running all over the place and have a pipe (about 20mm) running from the inlet manifold around to the exhuast? If so then it might be easiest to just get a standard manifold without the emissions gear or you just blank everything off. Either way it is a pretty easy.

The TD42 is a very very basic motor so worst case scenario you'll have to get the pump tuned on a dyno after fitting the turbo to get the benefit. You should really do this anyway so no big deal.

If you can't answer these questions then I assume you are getting someone else to fit the turbo anyway. Where are you and who are you getting to do the job?

was going to do it myself but i havent decided on which turbo route to go yet. talking to a guy with a turbo kit for $2000 (used and no exhaust), bit unsure at the minute, cant actually see the pipes you mention so i am assuming it should be ok. i am up near hamilton. thanks

$2k is not a bad price. I sold my old Safari kit without exhuast but with I/C (custom top mount) and filter for $2700 a while ago and new you are looking at $4k +. There are cheaper ones out there but you get what you pay for!!!
