West coast tracks?

Post by mudgripz »

Planning a trip over to Reefton area with few friends christmas time. Have done alot of trips there but not in last couple of years. What is the latest re Cathedral caves - is it only accessible from the Waipuna river driving upstream now - I understand access from the Ahaura end is now shut down? What's the hill like to drive up?

Also does anyone know about the lshort Staircase creek track into the top of the Grey - was fairly rutted out last time I did it.

And is no name road still open and accessible. Also considering the Montgomery hut track by reefton - is this still open?

Any other ideas - thanks.

Montgomery hut: there is dydimo in the river so wash your trucks down and do this last.
Staircase: have done 4 times in last twelve months, I don't consider it hard but after the last lot of rain it could be interesting.
Waipuna tunnels is only accessible from the Waipuna end. The hill is fine. You can get access the other way by contacting the farmer, he is not adverse to access, just wants people to ask. Don't have his number but at that time of year it is usually on a notice pinned to the fridge in the camp kitchen at reefton motorcamp. Or ask around at the Arahura pub for it.
Big river is open and easy as.
Have a good weekend

Cool - thanks for that. Will be staying at reefton camp so will ask there, and contact the farmer so we can go in from top. It's a great piece of nz to stay and play in.

I went through Noname Rd and Cock-eye last month and was reopened with the trees removed. In good condition. They are logging at the top of the hill going over to shantytown and have a skid site up there which may require a bit of work.

German Gully was locked off a couple of weeks ago.

I will be staying at Reefton Motor Camp from Dec 27 until Jan 3 on a private trip . We will hopefully be going through the Bulletproof Chasm track to the Staircase so can probably fill you in at the motor camp on the condition of the track.

Cheers Richard

Does anyone know about the condition of the Mt Greenland track. Two years since I last went through and the mudholes halfway up were getting very cut up then?

Mudholes are passable, there is a track around them now. Some parts near the top getting very rutted but a little road building can sort that.

Hi Mike

I will be at the motor camp on Saturday so make your self known. When you see our trucks you wouldn't want to come with us as we just bush bash and haven't got any straight panels and very little paint.

We have purpose built trucks and are all running 35s with double diff locks and 9500 winches and moded suspension. You could tag along into tracks but we won't be hanging around helping other trucks through.

It will be good to see you guys.

Cheers Richard

We will be in Reefton from boxing day onwards, Cruisy trips with the kids and a few motorbike trips too. Just doing some easy tracks with a few mates so keep an eye out for us.
