PRS - is FM and digital, much clearer and the most modern type. Hand helds are cheap <$100 for a good one, in car can be costly $200+ for radio then an antenna at $100ish

CB - Old style CB radio, what the truckies use, runs on AM and is analogue. Can get a new CB in car for $127 last time I looked at DSE. Antenna, trademe, cheap <$50. Hand helds, never used them..

Most people are moving to PRS. All depends what your mates have though. Generally almost all private trips I've been on use PRS. On the Central Club trips their standard is CB, although PRS gets used in recoveries. I suspect PRS will become standard over the next few years.

One word of warning, be careful bidding on radios on trademe. Have seen some that won't work here, and some that have been sold for well over the RRP.

Cab mount:

CB - 130ish

PRS - 200+

Handheld

CB - Dunno

PRS - <$100

Then for the truck mounted ones you need an antenna

Dick Smith has a range of them starting from cheapies to ones that have auto talk and rechargeable packs inside them which i'd recommend as they do like batteries if you have to keep replacing them!

Dick Smith is usally best for the radio, work out what you want, then check the prices online.

If going for an in cab one, speak to your local auto sparkey about aeriels, they have a much better range of arials and mounts than DSE. And they have good catalogues...

 I have a piss-poor excuse for a products page... I'm working on it, sorry :P

I can get the little basic twin pack handheld radios for $90, details as follows:
Image
Uniden UH036SX Twin Pack UHF Radio
Up to 3km range line of sight.
Auto Squelch - Automatically shuts out unwanted noises.
Duplex repeater capability - transmit & receive on different channels with
repeater station (if available) relaying your message to extend the range
over a greater distance.
Precision matched antenna - enables the signal to travel a further distance
between before weakening.

Or the in-cab mounted unit with the following specs for $290:
Image
Super Compact Size 40 Channel UHF CB Radio
Two Digit CH Indicator LED Display
Instant Channel Programmable
One Touch Instant Channel Recalling
UHF CB Repeater Access Facility
Open Scan Function
Transmit Power 5W Max
Channel Select Rotary Knob
Variable Squelch level adjust knob
Volume Control Knob with Power On/Off Switch
Comes complete with Detailed Instruction Book, Mobile Mounting Bracket, Microphone & Power Lead
External Speaker Jack

Range:18kms Typical Range in kms (line of sight)

I generally carry none of this in stock, but I can resell pretty much most of the Uniden range (including phones and GPS units) of products and most of it is overnight. Aerials for in-cab stuff I don't carry, but Dick Smith have a good range, depending on the required fit, or I can arrange something to suit from a local aerial manufacturer if you want me to do the install.

Hope that helps

Steve

If your buying handheld radio's, go for the 2watt power, you may pay a few more $ but perform much better when inclosed envirment, such as trees ect.
As for aerials go for a ground plane, better for long range communication.

It's mounted into the aerial base, and does the same to your signal as if you mounted the aerial to the cencre of the roof. Improves the signal if your mounting your aerial out on your bullbar. Check with suppliers, they have good info about them. budget aerials work well, a ground plane works 10% better.
