Long time lurker, first time poster.

Post by T-Boon »

Hi there

I`ve been lurking on these forums for a while readin up on all sorts of 4wd goodness,

Finally been able to create a user account, for obvious bot reasons etc…

Am going to build up a 1990 surf with a 1UZ and a couple inches of body lift couple inches of suspension and prolly some “33’s then go from there.

location added :D

Bit of background on me.

I`ve been into drifting for the last few years, but due to limited or no track time, i have parted out my drift car, and decided on 4wding as you can do it many more places.

I’ve built many drift cars (mainly Nissans but a couple Toyota’s), so am familiar with the mechanics behind it all, just gotta get used to lifting a car up instead of lowering it.

Was looking into Safari`s and Suzuki`s but a surf popped up at the right price :D

As above, I’m planning on a surf, I’ve found one off a mate, 1990 v6 (possibly shagged head gasket) so the 1Uz is in order. So far as there`s not a lot of rust in it I’ll grab it, and its only $900. done a lot of research, and the only thing I haven’t planned on is moving the box cross member, but that cant be too hard.

So far the plans :

Surf Body
Celsior 1UZ front bowl sump 404040pin ecu
Custom Sump
Flywheel
Bellhousing
Clutch
1UZ to Surf Engine mounts
Wiring
Log headers and Exhaust
Full Service
Misc - Body lift - PS Lines - Aircon

Then there`s the suspension and tires, but I can get tires cheap (being an ex drifter :D )
Thinking I’ll do a 2 inch body lift, and a couple inch suspension lift, so I’ll need brake lines too. Then I’ll prolly run 33’s so its not too extreme.

Once that’s done, I’ll take her off-road, and see if I wanna look into diffs, or is the stock ones are “enough” which I’m sure they wont be.

All in all I should be able to have the engine in and going for under 6k (including purchasing the car), as the surf is the manual V6 with the handbrake that makes it easy, and the right clutch setup so I’m told.

If anyone can see anything I’m blatantly missing please feel free to tell me, but I think I’ve got most bases covered.

Cheers
Dan Teeboon

and ofcourse a photo to boot :D

If you can, fit a mid bowl sump. less chance of running out of oil on hills/slope and running bearings

nah, i`ve looked into it, without a couple hundred mil body lift, it sits on the front diff.

Add an Eaton to that list or bust!

Sad that you sold your Ae86 (or was it 85?), I did the same with my 86 street/club car earlier this year and go into 4wding. Its awesome fun and so much easier to find places to go, well in wellington it is.

Good luck with the build and good job sticking with the trusty 1uz 8)

Only thing I can suggest is possibly upgrading the IRS front because I doubt the diff is going to take much of a beating, maybe change project to a 70 series landcruiser (BIG live axles)?

well, a 70 series land cruiser wont be as cheap as the surf, as its more in the first place, and doesnt have all the manual bits i need and i`m guessing the conversion isint as easy.

I may look at building something a bit more extreme later on if i really decide to get into it, or just look at upgrading the diffs and charging the 1u.

But thats a bit off, wanna give it a go and find the limits first :D

and before i really get into the build, i gotta sell my other 180sx, if you know anyone who`s after one, gimme a yell.

got the surf at my place now.

Gotta fix the radistor and see if the V6 is salvageable (blown hg or not) so will prolly compression test it to see.
anyone done a comp test on a 3VZ ? easy to do ?

then if it lives, do body lift, suspension, and tyres, take her out and see if i like her, and go from there.

If you have a factory ln130 V6 surf, than you should have the r151 gearbox and 4 pinion 8" rear diff. Both of these are more than adequate for up to 300hp (and maybe a bit more as long as you are not too loose). The 7.5" front diff on the IFS is weak as piss along with the front cv's and these should be the first things you break

The chassis code states R150F so i`m guessing its a R150 box?

How do they compare to the 151 ?

Hmmn, looks good, depending on price, with that and the cheap surf i`ve got could make a pretty sweet truck.
I asked him to relist, what sort of reserve is he lookin at ?

to be honest, it didnt really, as it just carves a path through the mud,

If i was playing on rocks i might, but at this stage i`ll leave it on. and it makes a easy recovery point, just gotta get under her and make sure the bolts are rated ones, and might add some extra hooks while i`m under there.

i stacked my ass end twice on the weekend, bumper been removed, couple big drop offs tho, we did a fair few of the xxxx trails, my rear bar has been a long time in the making, gona have to get the damage fixed once the bar is complete, so im protecting straight panels and not already buggered ones, and nah theres not much chassis to run bars off, not like on your patrol coxsy, rear chassis rail behind bumper. we gota make arms coming off side chassis rails

50x50 4mm box protects the rear nicely.
When you take the rear bumper off the rear of the surf is nice and high up in the air. haven't hung up on mine since the bumper came off.
A receiver type tow bar is a must though.
Spare tyre is a different story though. Need to lift the mounting up proper and mount it to the rear bar.

yeah, i`ve been thinking of making a swinging rear bar, that holds the spare, and a jerrycan if i want, besides i dont think a 33x12.5 will fit under there. then poss fit a long ranger type fuel tank...
