If swamper tyres were widely available in NZ, would you buy them and what would you buy?

Hi Warren,

I've been close to importing some Swampers from USA for a while. The current agent in NZ seams to be asking alot for the ones he sells (trademe user: csl3 or here is a link http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Wheels-tyres/4x4/auction-195061726.htm). Think he wanted $700 a tyre for a 37" Bogger.

Think they would be great in tyre sizes 36" and bigger as seam to be limited options here in NZ. 2 guys in our club run 36x12.5x15 TSL SX's and I have a set of 33x14x15 Boggers. If they were the right price I'd look at some 38.5x15x15 Boggers or 38.5x14.5x15 TSL SX's.

I reckon they are awesome tyres but had heard the last agent (before current one) pulled out as he didn't sell alot.

Hope that helps,

Thanks Matt,

I know most of what went on with the previous dealer and I know a bit about the guys currently importing them who are just buying and shipping what they need, mainly for themselves and people they know. There isn't actually an agent in NZ at present. I'll guesstimate some prices and see how they stack up against privately imported swampers, and see if anyone on here is still interested.

I agree and disagree on the price thing.
You only buy swampers for a reason, they are one of the shittiest road mannered tyres around, and they have really crap longevity when used on the road.
But, they do have a really good soft compound that deforms over irregular shapes very easily (unlike other common tyres that swampers are often pitted against). They also hang onto rock etc when wet (very important to me). There are not too many other manufacturers who have the larger sizes available as interco either.
So yes while I agree that (as with most things) price dependency is an important consideration, I suggest that if you are looking at this brand of tyre, there are other factors that are going to be of higher importance than price comparability with other ( and IMHO, inferior) brands.
If you have never run on decent sized swampers before, I am not interested in your comments, however if you have, please post up, as I would like to know what you think.
And Warren, if you go ahead with this, I would be interested in what the pricing structure will be.

Yer...wot he said
I bought the Iroks because they are the most popular rock crawling tire around, by far the most common in US and the comp scene. I havnt really given them a good thrashing on various surfaces other than rocks yet, but from what little experiance I have with them in mud and clay, I was surprised how well they went, they dont have huge tread depth like a simex or others, but they work well enough in the mucky shite. Now of course this could be because of their size and with two lockers, hard to know, but lets just say I was pleasantly surprised. Time will tell

Those irocks did pretty well in a couple of winch comps a few years ago (till they got banned) - the dudes that were running them were using 10 inch wide rims, which put the tyre width outside of the rules -

I enquired about a set of 35x10.5x15 boggers for my rally truck from US Procurements in Auckland.. I was told $890 a tyre..
I have been running 34x9 TSL swampers for 5 years now both on the Blizzard and on the cruiser.. I'd always have a set of swampers over Simex. personal preference maybe but they bag real well and sound like a DC3 plane on the road..

If your going to look at bringing some in i'll be your first customer if the price is resonable..

The other place to try currently for Swampers is Warren @ Cruiser Spares in Upper Hutt, 048262329 as they import and stock a few. Like Glen @ US Procurements he buys direct and imports with other stuff. $890 is pretty steep given that US retail is approx USD $360.

I have to agree with rokhound, large swampers handle terribly but are fawking great offroad tyres in my opinion :D . I run Q78 TSL's (35.5x10.5x15) on my hilux as well as 35 wranglers for shiney trips. I don't have any difflocks just useless LSD's and from stepping up from kumho's (35's) and now wranglers to the swampers the traction is amazing. I have done quite a few trips with them and been with people who run simex's and over many different terrains i beleive the TSL's piss all over them. Through the Bulletproof chasm last weekend i was the only truck without difflocks and let the tyres down to about 6psi. The only places i couldnt drive as far as Richard (BFG's) and Andi (simex) was when my truck was cross-axled and some places i drove further than Paul who runs Creepy Crawlers. I quite often let the tyres down to 10psi or less and they stay on the bead very well even though i dont have beadlocks so i have fitted heavy duty tractor tubes. If i compare my truck to Richards :D we both have LN65 double cabs, 4.5 diffs, similar suspension travel, very similar power with my 1kz and richards supercharged 5L, his truck being manual and mine auto, the only real difference being traction - tyres and diffflocks. Richard runs 35x11.5x15 simex's and twin ARB's compared to my TSL's and LSD's. In many tracks the only thing stopping me driving further than him is the difflocks. The swampers provide just as much if not more traction than the simex's and as Rokhound said provide great traction on rocks even when wet which is something a simex cannot do.

just my 2c

Suppose what part of the country your gonna use them in make the difference, around here in Hamilton Simexs seem to outdo the swampers for traction on our clay base tracks, Except when driving in creek beds, where the swampers seem to have better floation in the fine pebble base.
But in saying that when one of my friends put brand new swampers on his cruza, they went as good as simexs for a couple of months, but as soon as they started to loose there edges it was all over for them - hes even tried recutting/grooving them but to no avail.
He's changing to silverstones/simexs now

and yet i had to tow a cruiser with 35 simexes twice on the weekend with my wranglers, and dont think the size difference was to blame as the inflated diameters arnt that different

Was only saying what i had seen in our local conditions as a observation, I,ve been out on days where aired down MTR's struggled to get out the car park, when swampers, simexs, and S.A.T.s roamed around with out problems.
And the swampers im talking about were 33 x12.5 x15 s tsl's beadlocked and run at 6 - 8 psi

yep, and im a firm believer that you have to match your tyres to your vehicle, with a reasonable amount of wheel speed mine clear really well and thats the key.
When someone creates the perfect tyre for every condtion ill buy the first set :D
