Gorge down is generally a better option, gets the bigger boulders out of it first and if anything breaks you are heading back closer all the time if you need to drag some one out. Generally river crossings are better to go down stream with the flow.

But in saying all that the river is so low at present and it really doesn't matter which way you go on the Ashley - will be a fairly easy trip.

I won't be able to make it on Sat but do enjoy it. Just be careful of the nesting birds between the Okuku and Rangiora (best to stay out of the open river bed which is easy as there is the 4x4 track on the north bank for that stretch and on the north side of the main flow dow stream from the Rangiora bridge - well that was the instructions last year, I haven't heard anything much about the birds this year - just keep an eye out for them and if you notice them just move out of the open shingle areas. For some reason a bank to bank flood is good for the birds but a few 4x4s aren't. I think the real problem is people and dogs staying in one place for too long which makes the birds stay away from nests too long that the eggs are affected.)

There are soft patches but I was puddling around down there yesterday just in 2wd high and got out of the soft spots with a bit of spinning and the odd reverse. Got squealing stones in the brakes to get out tho.

I haven't been up the top end, but from the flow down here (Rangiora/Ashley) I'd be comfortable doing it with no snorkel at the moment, just stay nearer the back of the pack and watch the line of approach that the others take. The only real reason to end up in a deep hole at present is poor line, something unexpected, or purposely going in it :D let some one with a snorkle explore those options. Just watch your speed on entry and be aware of where the intake is.
