newbie recovery gear

just started getting into 4wd and want some basic safety/ recovery gear
so far ive thought of:
hand winch
tow rope
mount some towing hooks
fire extinguisher
any other basic equipment il need?

urgent aswell....
first aid kit
spade
snatch strap (not sure if thats what you are calling a 'tow rope')
rated shackles x2
likes....
prs radio
highift jack
basic tool set, others will have some tools but dont rely on them!!!

hand winch Will need a tree trunk protector and a shakle or two to use with this. I would put this down the lower end of gear I must have list unless you do alot of solo offroading.

mount some towing hooks This is the very first thing to do. Make sure they are rated and the mounting point is up to the task.
fire extinguisher and don't forget first aid kit
any other basic equipment il need?
Add to that list a spade and maybe a grubber. You would be surprised how many recoveries can be made easier if some spade work is carried out.
Where abouts in NZ are you? I would recommend you join a local club. They will provide you with a minimum equipment list they require you have to participate on their activities.

cheers there is some essentials that i have forgotten there!! yes sorry i ment snatch rope. im in west auckland. would like to join a club but would like to make my truck a bit more capable first (mud terrrains and a lift)

Just add the bits that Kaney suggested (First Aid kit etc) and maybe pick up some Mud Terrain tyres (even some 1/2 worn ones off Trade Me - there should be something on Jap 6 stud rims). I have seen a few people having issues in the mud at Woodhill etc with All Terrain tyres (but keep them for road use).
Norwest Club is probably your "local", send me or "diffsx2" (Rob the Norwest president) a private message if you need more details.
Club meetings are at Paddy's bar in Kumeu on the second Monday of the month (the wrong side of the tracks and down the alley).

Join a club before you do anything as then you'll get the first hand advice that can save a lot of money that you may spend making things look good but be useless. Go and drive your truck like it is first as you'll learn more about it and yourself but just make sure you go to somewhere suitable to the ability.
The only things you really need to get started are
recovery hooks (fitted correctly)
snatch strap
shackles
1st aid kit
spade
fire extinguisher
and an open mind!!!!
And talk to the guys at Nor-West, some of them are OK, just be warned they are quite social bunch.

cheers mate im going to put a set of mud terrain tyres on my truck then going out to woodhill.. bought some gear already just trying to find some recovery hooks might go to a truck wreckers and see what they got

If you get something thats substandard you could find; a) you are turned away from trips, b) nobody will be willing to pull you out of the crap, c) it breaks and kills someone

I'm needing some decent hooks aswell. Found these ones on trademe looked alright to me but I wouldn't really know. 10000kg rated.

Supercheap does hooks for 21-22 bucks if you ask for a better price at the counter. They also come with 8.8 bolts unlike the last ones I bought for $10 more

Get new rated tow hooks , I paid about $20 each for mine
A hi-lift jack is a handy bit of kit, especially if you get the chain kit to use it as a winch.

Are the repco high lift / farm style jacks legit? I was talking to the guy at my local repco and he could get me a 60" one for $150.
Not sure if I should get that and put together my own winch kit for it or just get the whole shebang with an authentic high lift from 4wd bits?

I bought my rated tow hooks from steel an tube rigging supplies. They were only $15 each i think cookes sell them aswell
