well i now i have a big prob, jut got a new gearbox fitted to my pajero because there was a loud whine coming from it,talked to 4 different macanics and a gearbox specalest they all told me that the whine i was hearing was a bearing in the gearbox had gone,so i booked it into a mitzy dealer to replace gearbox (cheepest place i could find).they supplied and fitted a second hand box, only to find out in the road test that the whine was actually coming from the front diff, they opened it up and it was full of water, all the splines and cogs and stuff are all stuffed now,so i have to get a new front diff,i got a spear fully working gearbox now though, its safe to say that ive now lost respect and trust for some macanics.
If anyone has a front diff for a 91 pajero swb 2.5 td,let me no.
must fit onto a 4D56 engine

surely the front isnt permanantly engaged on those? slip it out of 4WD (so the front isnt turning)and the noise goes away ?

Yep the front is always engaged with the 'super select' ones that run the full time 4WD. They have a 2WD option but this does not disconnect both alxes from the diff, only one.
I "may" have one available after the weekend, however ti will depends what ratio your's is. Jump under the rear and see if there is a ratio on the back diff, It'll most likely be 1:4.8 or something similar. Otherwise it is printed on the firewall on the manufactures plate.
I have seen a coupleon Trade me lately, just a matter of checking the diff ratios.
Cheers

Arghhh na
they have this funky slider that is splined back into the gearbox and the seal is round the drive shaft, lose a drive shaft and you lose your gearbox oil

PB your not haveing a good run, considering how much you payed for the box
anyway if you need a diff I've got one here thats going good I've even got some manual hubs if you want them PM me if your keen

ok found out what my front diff ratio is, it's a 1:5.2,aparently the soft top pajeros run a lower diff ratio due to the factory 18" rims they come out with.
does anyone have a idea of how much work is involed in changing the diff?do i need to remove any thing like steering or suspenion, ive been told that it can be a big job to do

,is it the kind of thing that me and some mates could do,if so what kind of tools do i need to have?
any help would be nice

Have you found another 5.29 diff? If its any help they were in the Soft top diesels (like yours), but only the 2.3's and 2.5's. The 2.8's were different and as far as I can work out, the 3.0V6 ones were the 4.875's.
I just pulled the entire front end out of a Pajero on Saturday from hub to hub, took a couple of hours, but didn't pull the diff to bits sorry, but it was a 1:4.875
There are a lot of different diffs for Pajero fronts, just make sure you get the right one, there are high and low pinion front diffs both with different ratios.
