Would my old tow bar (88 surf) fit a 90 surf

No. Coil towbars and Leaf towbars are totally different

Yes no maybe, it might fit or it might foul the tailgate - but it would look very odd... the ute and surf ones are different dimensions - although the mounting is in the same place.

Try it and see... IT definitely will have the brackets in the right spot, but might not have the holes, and will probably foul on something... the back ends are totally different although the chassis rears are very similar
