when i bought my MU, the previous owner had made the air con into a compressor, which filled a tank in the boot. he told me i should put oil in the air con pump, and showed me where. But ... how much do i put in, and how often? i obviously did something wrong, as my current one seized today, causing me to miss the laurie sanson.

Al, QUICK!! rip down to your local wreckers and grab an air-con pump out of an early falcoon.
they have a twin piston pump with its own oil sump. does not need to be fed total loss oil.
bloody things are a standard low rate air compressor!! has the electric clutch and all.

and on and on it goes.

its not even the compressor that i want ... i just dont want it to seize again, because the belt that runs it also runs the power steering.

What bob is saying is that most air con pumps require regular applications of oil via the air intake to keep them running BUT there are some like the early falcon ones that have a isolated sump and do not need the oil in the air line.
the biggest problem with the oil in the air line method is that you then need a filter on the outlet from the compressor to remove any oil from the air as the oil is not good for tires or tubes.

If the pump has seized I would sugest that adding oil will not help as the pistons need to be moving to draw the oil in and circulate it around the workings of the compressor

a good trick is to hook the aircon intake up to your rocker cover breather. Then it sucks in oily fumes

would that oil be good for the seals etc in the aircon pump? those seals are made to run in a different oil.

those seals are made to be lubricated by aircon gas so i dont think they really care about what you stick down there as long as its a lube

i have already replaced the seized pump with another isuzu one. what i am asking is how to take care of the new isuzu one? does anyone know what sort of quantity of oil to put in, and how often? and is gear oil ok (gearbox / diff oil) ?

nope, the GAS does not do the lubrication, there is a very light special oil entrained in the gas flow, circulates around as bubbles in the gas. They had to change the oil type when the world went away from freon.

OK I am talking major aircon installations here as well as refrigerators, but the principle is the same.

Bobs right, R12 refrigerant systems use a mineral oil and R134a uses poly alkaline glycol oil. If you use the wrong oil it will cause the seals to swell and leak, it won't make any difference on a ac air compressor though.

id run a wee bit of transmission fluid..its nice n light and good on seals.
wont need alot a drip or afew depending on size of tires and how many tires youre inflating.

I have a lightly oil soaked oil sponge in the air intake for my pump and I have only oiled it twice in the whole time that I have had it set up, which is 3 years. Never had a problem with it yet (touch wood)....

That's why I am hanging out for a falcoooon ac compressor of the like that I mentioned. then all I gotta do is shift nearly everything on the front of the engine to get it in.

What I COULD do is buy a winch motor to run it. Now THAT makes good economic sense, dont it?

there is a pump used on volvo's that we used to put into bagged cars
pumps about 9 cfm and is internally oiled
i think there bout 500 brand new or 50 bucks from pick a part
i have a couple next door ill find the pump number for you
