Holden 186

Post by Flyingpony »

My 2A has got a Holden 186 fitted and I'm new to this engine.

Which fuel does it require? 91 Unleaded Octane?

Does it need to have any fuel treatments with regards to today's fuel not containing lead anymore?
- Which product and where to get them?

Should I be light on the gas pedal with regards to its power output chewing the stock standard LR drive train?

How does this engine compare to the 4cyl 2.25?

Thanks

just run 91 unleaded. no fuel treatment needed, breaking axles is only a problem if you are bouncing the back end otherwise they are fine. Much more power than the standard motor but a good mod to do is to put injection off a later model vk on. Much more power for not alot of money

Thank you. The 186 runs nicely on 91.

When the engine starts having to work going up hills, any idea what causes the hissing noise?
The more throttle is gets, the more it hisses. Got the feeling it's unburnt fuel hitting the hot exhaust. I remember that in-line sixes commonly found in the old Bedford trucks make the same type of hissing sound when they're working up hills.

The 186 power output is good but it's also extremely thirsty. Will fitting the injection setup you mentioned improve its fuel economy? Hopeful it's a decent whack.

For a Series running a 186 engine, what is the typical fuel range?
Was expecting 650-700km per tank but reality is not even remotely close. Almost ran out of fuel twice in the middle of no mans land.

Can the 186 engine run on LPG as is or does it require modification?

Thanks.

Sorry cant help you there, but the carbys float levels are very critical so it may pay to check them out.

Yes it can improve economy. Do you have an overdrive?

Sorry, cant help you with the range as I never ran mine on the road for any distance. From memory they are only a 40 litre tank (or close to it). You could have a crack at fitting dual tanks if you wanted more economy?

No modifications required, you just have to find the right bits

Why would there be an electrical cable going from the coil to the carb?

Haven't spotted an overdrive but it's got a sticker for one on the back. It might have 3.54 diffs (how can I tell if it does?) though rear axle is clanking so that may change depending on repair. Speedo is off ... was expecting 1.66km/hr for each 1mile/hr but according to the Red & Blue boys she does 2km/hr for each 1mile/h! Makes the maths easy and would be a bonus if it were running diesel instead - Ssshh  .

Got a standard sized ~70l tank. Fitting additional tanks is on the long term upgrade radar. Not sure how to connect them for filling purposes?

Excellent :D
But LPG is a dry fuel compared to petrol, wouldn't the engine need a valve lubricating additive?

Where would the LPG tanks get mounted?
Inside the wagon is off limits as that's my space.

Thanks.
