i was told by a mechanic that i should be looking at doing the injectors and tappets on my td42 safari. was wondering whats the best way to go about it. who does setup the injectors well? i heard some are done on an exchange basis?? what about tappets, i have never done anything like that whats involved??
i run a dts turbo kit soon to be intercooled, i run 12psi, with 3 inch exhaust, so really want to get max power/torque that the old girl can do, its 225,000kms.
It was dynoed with the turbo on and was 85kw at the wheels, but they reckon it should be more??

I actually had a chat with one of the guys at Turbo Diesel Reconditioners (hamilton) about my 4.2's lack of power and occassional black smoke under load.
Everyone ( EVERYONE) who has had one of these trucks has told me that having the injector pintles replaced/burst pressures adjusted and then diesel pump tuned/set made a MASSIVE difference to how the engine performed- but T.D.R basically told me that it'd cost me $700 for very little gain.
The guy told me that the TD42 has two common problems. 1, their EGR valves get sticky and jam open- they usually plug the hoses (mine has no EGR stuff) and 2, the engines chew out their rockers/shims (or something.. sorry.. it kinda went in one ear and out the other). The low power is supposedly caused by the valves not opening completely due to this- which does not let enough air in to match the diesel being fed in.
Perhaps this is what he meant by tappets causing the low power? When it comes to engines without OHC's i get a little confused.

hmm yeah, i'm not an engine person. i will do anything else, but just wasn't my trade unfortunately.
