had a few charging issues of late flat batterys in the morning been to auto sparkys twice now could not find nothing wrong with it, they said it could be a intermiting problem working and now and then??? which may be right cause it can go for months with no problems at all.
any way was over the coast 2wks ago and been running the truck all weekend went to fill up in westport and truck batterys were flat, jump start and away i went been fine ever since,
BUT i just ran a volt meter over my batterys while the truck was running and its now putting out 31.6 volts on idle but at the sparkys while ago it was fine , so found the problem?? now does mean my batterys are stuffed being over charged??
and wot shud be the volts on idle anyway??? 26volts ??
thanks
any help will be good
vince

When the regulators crap out the alternator usually charges at full noise which can be just over 15v for a 12v setup so I would assume for 24v it would be over 30v.
It can certainly damage the batteries having them overcharged, will take a while but it will actually destroy them.
Pull the alternator and get it rebuilt, at least now you can show the sparky.
Matt.

They should be charging at about 27-28 volts. Yes you have stuffed batteries and alternator. Replace both batteries not just one. I learnt this all the hard way.

they quite often break the leg off a diode in the rectifer, which well still charge so looks like its working but wont charge much current.
I would double check the voltage with another multimeter as I have had cheap ones read high sometimes.
get batterys checked before changing them, they my be o.k

PS:I'll get those brake hoses for you this week

was not worth getting mine fixed u name it and it was worn out ,this problem has been on and off maybe 6mths now common in the safaris, only started to over changed coming back from coast when i saw it on volt meter on the dash,i took the plug off the alternator and drove home ,had batterys load tested and they are fine at the moment, but all good my alternator should arrive soon
