now im going against what ive said in the past that i will fit a comy v6 to my surf...
but today driving past a trade-in yard a saw a toyota cressida for sale, had a look... a relitivly straight cressida, leather interior, 2.8l dohc ( this is a 5M right?) w.o.f, reg, for the next month and a half, took it for a quick hoon, goes sweet, starts first pop.. for the price of...............................$600..............................
cheeeeeeap or what, complete running legal everything there car that i can drive around for 6 months then do a transplant into me surf.
now i want your guys opinion, if i brought it, the fact that ive got the whole complete running car, what else do i need for the conversion? and although i was dead set on doing the comy v6, will the 5M at this price be a much cheaper option, i read in another thread that the 5M will bolt up to my current 5 speed 3y gearbox? true?
other details of the car are model xx7-3R-xe and trans/axle 11/6
its a 1987 cressida, done 300,000 ks, but i would get it stripped and checked b4 the transplant.
opinions pleeeese, may buy it tomorrow
or why should i still do the comy conversion

yea i know, ive owned plenty a comy v6s, swear by them, and they are 1 ltr biga than the 5M and probably beta on gas, and they dime a dozen to replace and for parts, but this car is so cheap, than commodore ide say would reach the 1k mark b4 auction end

the 5m will not bolt up to your gearbox unless you use the right bell houseing or adaptior plates , also you will want to use the 3y fly wheel as the are heaver but this will need to be machined , now I have done alot of supra conversions and have done my old 3.8 commy as well ,and you will be wasting your timedoing the supra just stick with the commy , there is fark all price between the two adaptiors

havin done a similar swap,7mge into ln61 flat deck and if I was to do it again I would go for a lexus or nissan v8 because the toyota 6 motors are not really suited to 4wding and can cause problems with oil pressure to the big ends as I found out twice and having to ground up rebuild the motor which was money I could have spent on other cool shit
I would do a commy but the shame of a gm motor would be to embarrassing

Go the V6.
The power band and torque curve blow the old m series engines away. I had the 4th (known anyway) conversion to 5m in NZ and ran it for 5yrs or so, and yes they are great fun after driving an old oiler or 4 pot, but at about the same time a mate who used to go out with us a lot, grabbed a v6 commy powered unit, and blew us all to the weeds. It was (and still is) one of the most reliable petrol powered rigs I have been on trips with.
