Suggestion, Put a 1KZ engine and driveline in it.
IMO those were the best looking hiluxes, worthy of a modern drivetrain

would love a 1KZ but its a bit out of my price range at the moment
im planning on a ground up rebuild so i will do that first then worry about the drivetrain
plan is to tray back it as the tray has been kept by the last owner and fit a pto winch some how
and that RED PAINT has to go

it may well have to go, we cant afford to keep 3 vehicles
it will be sad to see it go but proceeds from the sale should cover the rebuild of the classic lux,
and at the end which i will have a nice little ute to cruise around in

W55 5-speed aluminum
Gear Ratios
First Gear: 3.566:1
Second Gear: 2.056:1
Third Gear: 1.384:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear: 0.85:1
Reverse: -4.091:1
Used in 2wd Hilux and some surf's

W56 5-speed truck
Gear Ratios
First Gear: 3.954:1
Second Gear: 2.141:1
Third Gear: 1.384:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear: 0.85:1
Ysed in 2wd and 4wd Hilux !st and Second are geared differently due to being a working vehicle that may tow or carry loads.

Preference it doesn't really matter for strength if you have the power neither of them are really strong but the lower first and second is beneficial in a lower powered application (I have a 4y turning 33's  )

If your going to run the 18R, put 7.50 SAT's on it.
Not 33's. IMO.

re the power steering, if you buy hilux stuff the power steering will bolt in exactly where the manual stuff comes off (obviously you will need a pump). I might even have a power steer box off an rn hilux if you need one.

Cheers.

On my lux I used to run 37's on the 18r with no lift etc (just a bit of firewall bashing) was completely standard. It worked but no powersteering was hard and it had next to no power. Used to only be able to pull first low offroad. Now its got rear springs in the front to move the axle foward 50mm (they bolt in but you need longer shackles, I think I made mine 5.5" between hole centres). I used an IFS surf power steering box which went in quite easily and I am using a SNR pitman arm adapter and 80 series TRE with an SNR drag link. I made myself a crossover steer arm which is quite cheap and easy but probably not ideal.

Now I have an injected holden 202 sitting in place of the old motor. Easily pulls 3rd gear offroad (but needs a heavier clutch for hill starts in 3rd). It made the truck about 10x better offroad because I could actually pull a higher gear.

went and picked the hilux up today, took the tray off, took the ugly bullbars off and gave it a water blast in and out.
the only rust i found is along the bottom of the windscreen, and a few little dents will be an easy fix for a panel beater. got a quote for $800 for panel paint that sounds cheap :D
just have to source a transfer and gear box, i found one on trademe but its in wellington if some one can pick it up and send it to me or bring to to hamilton let me know and i shall buy it

if i had kept all the gold coins when i cleaned it out the truck would have been free

If your truck came with a bellhousing that bolts to the 18r then you should be able to use either a g52 or a w56 behind it , both are 5 speeds.
If you use that one from tardme you can bolt on a r150 or r151 again both 5 speed and are stronger than the other two, not that you will need the extra strenght behind tha 18r :D

If you put the r15x gearbox in now you can upgrade to a lexus V8 later and still use the same box

That would make a nice conversion too :D

Come to think of it, was the truck a 4 speed? They may have a different bellhousing pattern to the w and g box's. some one with more hilux knowledge will know for sure.
