Im finding my wee sj alot of fun but it is in all honesty a bit slow for my liking. I have heard you can put a vitara/escudo 1600cc engine in? if so how hard/easy is it? Any other suggestions for more power would be great.

hi there the 1600 g16a will bolt straight in if you buy one of those adapter kits they are like 200 bucks or so on trademe. they will give u heeps more power i have a suzuki samurai and would like to do this swap but money doesnt let me. from what i can remember the j18a engines out of the suzuki balena or whatever they are called they have the same bellhousing as the vitara so you could proberly use the same adapter kit as for the g16a. just a little info or you could do one step further and squeeze a v8 in there

Big_AL on here has a 413 also with same engine but has rocklobster transfer. Completely different truck with it in and he can turn 32 simexes ok. Would think about that before swapping engines as i'm sure it would be easier and if not cheaper

i had a 410 with a newer model injected 1300cc from a newer jimney had a few mods-ground cam link computer etc etc and i had 33'' mickey thompson claws on it and it went really well
on my 3rd POS 70 cruiser still havent learnt

Yup, you can put a Vitara 1600 in. Either caburetted, 8 valve injected or 16 valve injected. I make & sell the adaptor kits on trademe to fit these engines.
Its about the easiest you can get in terms of engine conversions. My kit has everythng you need to get the motor physically bolted in to the chassis. You will need to swap sumps between the 1300 and 1600 and cut and weld the two oil pickups together first, but thats about all to install the engine. You may also need a body lift to get the bonnet to close depending on what motor you choose.
The carbed version is really simple as it doesn't need much / any wiring. The EFI versions take a bit more effort to get the wiring sorted out, but it is well worth it in terms of power and driveability.
The J18 / J20 engines share the same bellhousing, but have different engine mounts and crank bolt pattern so are another kettle of fish.

MyCo driver has just fitted my old Jimny motor into my old SJ that he owns

I'd recommend sorting gearing first as well. Standard Zuk gearing with big tyres sux arse.
Alot of Zuks running 33's and bigger,

I myself have just embarked on a 1300 GTi swap ,is alot more work than the 1600,for not alot of differemce. but i just like the sound of the engine.

From what I understand the 16V MPI engine is taller (because of the intake manifold), where as the 8V TBI is lower in height (as is the 8V carbed engine). If you fit the taller engine cut the bonnet and fit a bonnet scoop (backwards) or a hump of some sort. Of course the 1600cc engine is a little taller in the block also if I recall correctly.

The 1600 is 30mm taller in the block, so eats up alot of clearance under the bonnet. The carbed version should just fit, with some trimming of the bonnet stiffener.
The single point injected version is a wee bit taller again, and would need trimming of the bonnet underside and shimming up the front clip and bonnet to get it in.
The multipoint injected motor is taller again and really needs a body lift or bonnet bulge / scoop.

I have fitted a 8v carb to a 413 and no trimming was needed at all . This was not with Bens kit thou . But I do not think there would be much it the height with the two as they both used the same l/h side mount . I would not thing the 8v efi is any taller than the carb so would expect that to fit also .
