Surf Diff Ratio Changes

Pulled the front diff out of the surf tonight. About 7 teeth have been milled off the crown wheel. Havnt had a chance to see what the cutter(pinion) is like as it was a bit dark in the shed. Will get some photos tomorrow night.
Next step is to dismantle the diff, measure the replacement parts and hope they will fit, wash the bearings out put the new ring gear in and attempt to setup the backlash correctly. Anyone got a spec around with the correct backlash settins? Front and rear would be nice
Old munted Crown wheel and pinion = 4.1 ratio. Replacements 4.3.ones
More updates tomorrow night

Why don't you just get another complet front diff assembly from a wreckers. They are a dime a dozen & probably cheaper than rebuilding your old one.

There is an article here:
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/gear_setup/ which deals with the rear diff... not sure of the front settings tho...
Unfortunately most people just throw em away when they break, so it might be hard to find.

You might want to check but I think you can use an older style diff assembly and just change over the out put shaft & axle tube. Correct me if I'm wrong.

hello
im new so this mite sound silly changing the dif from 4to1 to 4to3 will make the surfs top speed greater is that rite?cheers

no it will make it lower for the same engine revs. If you then put bigger tyres on it will bring it back to normal again. If you put bigger tyres on without changing the diffs then your top speed will increase with the same engine revs. This is why people opt for 4.8 or 5.(something) when running 35" tyres. Your crawling speed is increased when putting larger tyres on and not changing your diff ratios from 4.1(normal for later surfs) to 4.8s or so
