At a guess id say it would be slow, and hard to get parts for. Stick with something more common or it will bite you in the ass later down the track

Hmmm early mazda diesel 2.2 ..... not known for their reliability,

civilian derivative of the Korean Army's standard 1/4-ton light utility, itself derived from the Jeep CJ-5 which was last built in 1982

the fake windscreen hinges -are purely designed for the sake of appearances

http://www.4wdonline.com/Kia/Rocsta.html

Yeah, they weren't very popular.

A couple of guys on the Jeep forum bought one as play toys, and found the
quality to be pretty shitful. Gneral concensus is that they're unreliable,
hard to get bits for and fall apart quickly as you say.

You can tell because it has the
7-slot grille, which is a trademark and can't be copies by other brands.
The Rocstas have 6-slot grilles.

They are buckets of unreliable shit with a tendency to shed small parts.

So Jerry, does that mean technically Land Rovers and Land Cruisers are Jeeps as well since they were based on licensed and borrowed products and ideas from Willy's and early Jeeps......     Not starting a flame war, but lets not forget the history either.

They all lead to the same jeep Adam..... . Willy's (the original, the one that started the whole thing, the one that played a big part in us not speaking German or Japanese now).

Wrong.
Show me how its a licenced copy of a CJ5 Jerry? Gime some documentation.

Actually Jerry, based on your comment i doubt that youve ever even seen a CJ5.... if you had have you would never have been able to come to that conclusion.

Jerry, the Mahindra were produced under licence, as were the Mitsi version (neither were copies of the cj5 either), therefore they have (begrudgingly i admit) some right to bear the Jeep name, and hence they share some of the same parts .... everyone that wants to call their Zuk a Jeep is dreaming, as Suzuki have utterly nothing to do with, and never have had anything to do with anything from any of the JEEP models. The rockstar IS NOT A LICENCED COPY... but was BASED ON/DERIVED FROM the CJ5... for appearances only, and even then they fuked it up.

CJ5

Roksta
Image

Note the rear guard shape, the front guard detail, the bonnet latch detail on the rocksta, the proportional distance of bonnet and body ratio, the shape of the doors, the angle and height of the windscreen......... ill let you spot all the rest of the differences.

A mere attempted rip off.... and nothing more. There is talk of them using the M38A1 templates, but if they have they obviously altered them, as rip off artists do, to avoid issues of theft.

The track with and wheel base dimensions are different also, not one single part is shared.

Do i need to carry on?

I have just done a bit of research on Jerry's claim, its actually a Kia Rocksta (which kind of evolved into Kia Retona). These are based on Korean army vehicles. Nothing has come so far on the net to suggest it was ever licensed from Jeep. In fact, a lot of the parts are actually "influenced" from Fords (which last time I checked was not Jeep's licence granter for CJ5s).

As for Mitsi and Mahindra ones, they were licenced CJ-3B (introduced in 1953) variants. These were not based on much later and more refined CJ5s (introduced in 1954).

As to Suzukis, the denomination of SJ stands for Suzuki Jimny series (which included many variants over the years. It was introduced roughly in the 80s, so could never have anything to do with the original Willy's (or could it be that it takes Suzuki engineers 40 years to work out the technology that Toyota and LandRover did in 5-10 years)......

To the OP, if you want it as a hack or toy, it would be modified after acquisition anyway so it does not matter.

No bubba, not touchy at all. Just feel the need to correct comments from people who know utterly nothing about what they are talking about. Seems a recurring theme with some folks who should just stfu.

Youre quite right, the FJ never was a rip-off, Mr Toyoda was an onto it character who just happened to have a similar idea for a vehicle. We just like to claim it as being a Fake Jeep to protect our fragile sensibilities as in many ways the FJs were a superior vehicle to the Jeeps of the same time.

The earlier AKs and BJs were. So it took Toyota a few years to incorporate earlier lessons in FJs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Land_Cruiser#1950-1959

Its a subject better left alone. There is a reason why this forum is "offroadexpress", not "jeep" or "suzuki" or "toyota" offroad forum!!!!

A good history article on Toyota LandCruisers: http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2005/12/23/188916.html

To be honest, if I couldn't buy a Wrangler the only other option for me would have been a FJ40.

In 1950, the U.S. military filed a special procurement order for 1000 4wd
vehicles to be used in the Korean War. Toyota responded with a prototype of
the Model BJ on August 1, 1951. The vehicle was named the "Toyota Jeep"
Fortunately, the right to the "Jeep" name was owned by Willys who forced
Toyota to pick another name. On June 24, 1954, the name "Land Cruiser" was
chosen.

From its humble beginnings in 1950 as a development project based on the design of the Willys Jeep.

not a rip off or a copy of, but definatly based on the designs of the jeep...just better

and i aggree, steer cleer of the roksa..sounds like trouble

Jeep has morphed from being a brand name to a nickname, such as 'truck' - we don't own trucks at all but we call them that anyway.

Anyway, it's a Jeep thing - I wouldn't understand.

no it wasnt a rip off of the jeep, because the fj plans were almost straight out of the landrover factory

which were ripoffs of jeeps
