I just got the bill for a service on a near new 70 series which has factory electric diff lockers The dealer has charged $86 for LSX LTD slip diff oil shouldn't a vehicle with diff lockers over open diff's use standard diff oil there isn't a tag on the diff stateing LSD oil as is normal practice if LSD oil is required I queryed the dealer this is the email response
I have just spoken to the technical department at Toyota and they said that because your Landcruiser has a standard rear limited slip diff, that yes we should definitely be using LSX LTD slip diff oil.
the way I see it either the technical dept don't know that they are doing or someone is lieing to cover their arse I'm not sure which is worse
I would like to think Toyota are a knowlageable and honest company to deal with can anyone come up a way to defend them

if its got lockers you need to use LSD oil, I use LSD oil in both my LJ71 diffs (ARB Locker rear and open diff front... LSD oil has additional additives that std oil doesn't.....

Yes LSD oil has additives relating to the heat and friction of a clutch that doesn't lock up with a dog type clutch as in these diff's those additives are the wrong one's ?

no you dont need lsd oil
you have no dog type clutch
you have no clutches
you have a locking dog
same with a lockright .. its no different to a open diff.. and in fact non lsd oil is better for your pinon set
take it back and make them replace it
power trax etc are differnt as they have clutches as well as the dog setup
basically write them back saying im sorry but my truck has the option electric diff locker .. not the standard lsd

First of all ring up and find out if there is any difference in price, then with that information go back and ask them to refund that amount there is no real disadvantage or benefit of having LSD Oil in your diff it should not eat any seals or O rings and will have the same lubrication qualities.
I called the three main oil companies 0800 numbers and eventualy got an answer all three said there is an additive they add to the LSD oil when it comes into the country and gets re-packaged, it is the same oil the price difference is for the additive. All three said you also need to use it as a break-in additive to reduce friction and heat generated by new gears, which can ruin hardness of teeth and their additive may be used with any synthetic or mineral gear oil.
I have run LSD oil in the front (LSD on my Hilux) and in the rear (lokka equiped) diff's as it is what I had at the time, yes it costs more but there is no disadvantage except for cost.

give them shit .you DO NOT need lsd oil in an electric locker diff .it wont do any damage but it is of no advantage either .
