Diff breather extension
Looking to extend the diff breathers on a 1999 Hilux. Union from Toyota - $18 and ex Japan so coupleof weeks delivery time.
Is there an alternate option for this? Locally made, same fitting ex Hydaulic place or similar?

Re: Diff breather extension
can you not just use a bit of fuel hose?

Re: Diff breather extension
the plan is to remove the cap as it is now (dust protector or whaever it is called) and put this at the end of the extension hose. Needs to have a way of connecting the extension to the diff itself - a union.
I may have all this wrong and making a Heath Robinson out of this (it is one of the things I do well)

Re: Diff breather extension
yes there is another way, unscrew that cap thing and screw in one of those air line fittings (for compressed air lines 8mm or something i think, the kind where the air line pushes into them and you push in the little ring to release it) and well your getting the fittings from the air place grab some air line as well and run it all somewhere safe and dry.
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!
Re: Diff breather extension
Ignore Jerry - He has a cruiser like I do. They already have a short extension and all you need to do is buy some longer hose and use the same fittings on each end.
With the lux I understand the breather is right on the diff housing so yes you need to get a screw-in fitting to attach the hose to on the diff and then put the cap on the other end.
Some say leave the cap off as it restricts the airflow too much esp when it had a longer hose to draw along, others say leave it on to stop spiders getting in and lubing your diff. I left mine on and still had some water getting in so took them off - still have some water getting in...

Sold my 1985, BJ74 MWB Landcruiser, rear locker, 33" MTs, snorkel, PTO winch, solid bars all round, spotties, AM CB etc.
Now just a 1994, 1kz Surf, pretty standard.

screw one out, go to your local engineering shop, buy some fittings (bout 10 bucks) and hose then push the hose on and run it up the chassis rail to the front and up the firewall then into the cab, same on front...easy

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!

You can put an inline fuel filter in the end rather than using the original fitting off the diff.
It helps keep the crap out a bit better, not too good at keeping out the water though
Re: Diff breather extension
Water has a 1/2 lb pressure on the outside of the seal per 300mm of depth, so no mater how long the breather pipe is you'll still get water into the diff if the oil seals arn't top notch.

Re: Diff breather extension
A good idea is to extend all of the breathers, diffs, trans, T-case etc all up to snorkel hieght and then fit a filter on the end. I've used a compressor filter as about the right size and nice and small. This keeps insect (Mason Bees) from getting into the hose and blocking it up.
Doing this means that even after driving into bonnet deep water, while everything is hot, the diffs don't suck water in.

Could the extensions be fed into a snorkel (well sealed of course) to give the height?

Re: Diff breather extension
When i did mine i got Brass fitting from Taylors .I think they were 1/4 NPT .I brought some thick rubber fuel hose that wouldnt crush easiely when hot or crack or break. (Para Rubber).
I run the front breather direct into my aircleaner box , via an a sealed electrical gland.
In the back i run the pipe up to behind & above the rear tail light...i put a small plastic fuel filter on this to stop dirt etc getting in the end.
I used about 4 metres of pipe to do the whole job.

That will actually put a vacum on the breather which isn't idea when under water. It is better to have then seperate or with a very (very) slight positve pressure.
