Warn solenoids - alternative??

Post by Swamped »

Hey
Well 3 of the 4 solenoids on my 24v m8000 packed up. What are the other options other than factory replacements??? fully equipped want over a hundred bucks each  . I've heard people mention allbrite solenoids, and replacements off 4wdbits?? Havn't found anything that actually explains other options/wiring configurations yada yada.....the solenoids in mine aren't the upright terminal ones which turn out to be cheap but the ones with the terminals out the sides....
Any help would be cool

Cheers...

If you PM Mark Crackett (UBOAT) from westport he may be able to help. He has looked into solid state ones that upgrade the winch.

I have just gone to solid state, Mine was $250 and is meant to be waterproof. I got sick of getting just a click and no action from the winch, they did not like getting dunked. I moved them under the bonnet but the damage was already done, if you are good with a soldering iron, they can be quite easily pulled apart and repaired, there is a layer of carbon builds up preventing full contact

I have seen the solid state ones in use and appear to be much more reliable than the warn ones so here is hoping....

You can replace any of them from any auto electrical outlet, I think before I went solid state they were about $40 a solinoid.

If you ahve the old style, they can be replaced with the new style prividing they are wired properly
SWB V6 Paj with one or two mods ;)

A sole state solenoid is an option from Warn aka Mossfet, but they cost the same as a winch motor. The ones that are being talked about have a standard solenoid inside a waterproof housing. This is not to saying they are crap because they seem to work very well and definitely last longer. I think this is mainly due to being waterproof but the end result is still the same.
I have run stansard 4 post solenoids (so you need 2 instead of 4) and I use Come-Up ones on my truck. I have had the same ones on since 2006 and they ahev been running a 7.8 hp 24v motor apart from when I went to 6hp 12v motors and ran 24v through them. This is on a Warn 8274.
The winch on my tow wagon is an 8274 with a 6hp motor (12v) and that has a sealed solenoid (from Traxion aka Superwinch).

So I would recomend either the sealed units that everyone sells at present and are standard on a few models now as well, or get a standard 4 post solenoid and keep it dry. Either way plenty on performance and will last really well.
