Surf, Coon springs and shocks

Post by Smurf »

I've just destroyed my third Rancho shock in the rear of my Surf, tore the bottom mount out of the housing and lost all the oil.
Third time I have done this so its time to rethink mounts.
How have guys mounted their shocks in the rear with Coon springs? also what shocks have you used.
cheers in advance

I dont have coons but a similar set up with longer springs, have welded new mounts on top of the diff just inside the leaf pack and angled them up at about 70/80deg to the tube crossmember in the chassis, this has extensions on the top to allow more up travel whilst keeping the shock as upright as possible
have used bilstein 12in travel shocks from jafa
swb lux with 7mge, trailgear crossover, trailgear rear lift kit, custom front bar, runva 1200lb winch, custom snorkel, 37" Mtrs, custom deck, lockright in the rear.

Have you checked to see that they have enough travel and your not just ripping them apart with too much articulation?

yep, I have had to extend the bumpstop to limit up travel, downwards is fine. The Surf hasn't been offroad since Xmas, road duties only since then and its still killing the shocks.
The way its ripped almost looks like it isn't getting enough movement in the bushes when flexing and trying to twist te bottom eye.

How about a single track bar to help with axle housing rotation?
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

i think you guys are right, my shocks mount off the front of the diff housing so the rotation is amplified.
I'll move the mount to the top of the diff and see how that goes, a track bar is a good idea too

Mine were in a similar spot on the old rig, axle rotation wasn't a problem at all, pins were welded to the front of the axle housing, and the backaide of the chassis crossmember, C section is really good for that task

flex was pretty good as well.
