 actually its a 2001 Hilux ute rear axle... the wider axles are in all the IFS trucks... and utes went IFS in '96.

Its a small thing... but an important one :)

Lets make disc brakes next week so I can get cert'd :)

well did a bit more "that easily led lad" and i
put the x over high steer in got it all tested $50 and thought lets go for a play!! straiight down the waimak in to the play ground which was all good till 5 mins later when the steering started to become juddery!!!!quick look underneath steering fluid pissing out !!!! so up with the bonnet quick look could not pinpoint it exactly but it was flowing fast so topped it up and headed home

Image

on closer inspection i noticed that the ball joint on the drag link had been thumped by the spring under compression :( :( which had pushed it up enough to break the seals in the steering box hence the problem of the leak.... though im pleased to say steve's ifs mount stood the whack :D nice job m8 so got another box and bolted it in then down to lineside to see about a flatter pitman arm tryed one or 2 different ones to no avail :( so down to the engineers to run a few ideas by him (with steve who was suposed to be buying stuff for his kitchen) easily led again we set off at 1 o clock ish and got back to my place at 5 ish after exploring shortening it,having a new spline cut in a flatter one $400   and looking for a box of somthing else that would do in all the scrap yards in chch ( which have mysteriously dissapeared) since steve last went to them) so called it a draw
been thinking about it since and the answere was dead easy ...... on my x over the ball joint is on the end of the drag link not the pitman ... so another pitman arm ground the top off and knocked the ball joint out and down the engineers again to get him to machine a bit to fit with a taper to suit the drag link ball joint and put it on top of the arm rather than underneath :D :D :D so simple  :oops:so pick the pnew pitman up on monday :D
but then i have another dilema should i loose the leaves on the front and go coils and rangie contol arms or stick with the leaves any imput would be gladly received as to the pros and cons of both
cheers Rik

Until my kitchen is done (and my wife signs it off) we're not allowed to be doing anything more to your truck :)

However - I'd suggest since you've solved the pitman arm problem then leave the leaves alone :) We'll fire the rears in the front - It'll only take 10 minutes  and it'll all be good... although the shorter pitman would have allowed us to move the axle forward a bit more... and clear the balljoint to the spring... but it was all going to cost lots... which was why we looked at coils.

Lets build the back up then go looking for more work in the front eh? I guess you measured that the balljoint body will miss the chassis?

Oh, and stop posting poser photos... a pic of the broken box, or oil dripping all over, or the pitman arms side by side... anything but more cheezy pomgolian grins and trucks on stupid angles

hey rik, just a thought why dont you cut your old deck up and use that on your new rear end. then you wont have exposed bar work and huge caps everywhere, looks shit as it is sori but... somthing like a mini deck would look good. i knw its means having panels but would look nice

straight from the school of making friends and influencing people :P

The barwork serves as a frame for the long-ass gas shocks and a bed to make sure he freezes his ass off on winter 4WD trips :P

Steve

PS: I suggested the same thing Padero... but Rik likes it :P

cheers ad for an honest opinion but not gonna be able to use old bed even if its bobbed as the fuel tank is going to sit inside new bed and be nicely hidden away, new bed needs loads of fine tunning yet and will look awhole load better when it is at correct height and got all the accesories on it
and i think we will be able to pull the front axle forward again steve i have a cunning plan so we need loads of agricutual spline   might be sunday for kitchen have to do the family thing today

Nah, not planning to sell it although everything has a price so for the right coin I'll happily start a new project... hey, just bought a 2.8TD Bighorn Irmscher today... that would look cool on portal axles and 44" boggers

I think the coil option plusses for the Rikasaurus are soft ride and flex, but the minuses are wallowy piggy ride and pain to get right for onroad use.
