The West Coast 2009 CMS draft can be viewed now and is to be considered for approval early in April by the NZ Conservation Authority.
The CMS identifies a number of 4x4 opportunities on the West Coast.

Looks like the chasm track made it in as a designated 4wd tarck, yeah best thing DOC ever did.

It just goes to show that with involvement things can be influenced. The submission numbers demonstrate that 4x4 would have been hard to write off. Now all it needs is a few more similar responses to other CMS drafts and consultations.
There is one guy who had a major part in getting many of those routes onto a DOC map and that's John Randle from ChCh. Thanks John for your effort and time working with DOC staff.

I received a letter about 3-4 weeks ago about this area and DOC were very good and listened to all the Submissions and personally replied to them.
This area is now changed to a "Back country remote zone" and it is on this basis the right to use it has been granted so we need to be careful not to damage the enviroment.
As well as putting in a private submission I went to the official meetings with DOC and they were very reasonable and listened carefully to everyones comments ,so they deserve a thumbs up.
I would encourage others to get involved in all the other CMSs coming up as well. It is time well spent and worth while.
Cheers Richard
PS not only did John Randle do a good job, but Glen also needs thanking for the work he did behind the scenes and bringing the whole CMS to our attention.
