2LT Info

Post by Bill »

Hi there guys (and gals)
I'm a long time reader first time poster.
Ive been reading some posts about boosting up a 2LT, some ppl saying 10psi, some saying 16...
Im running 25.8 and quite happily for some time!
Engine is 2LTE Series 2 with standard CT20 turbo
-2LT Series 2 injector pump, modified compensater, wound up fuel
-3inch turbo back exhaust, straight thru muffler
It gets up and goes alright, max EGT is 450 (can't complain with that!) cruises 100kmhr at 250 degrees
So yea anyone keen on boosting up a hilux, go hard and if ya wreck somethin... it only gets replaced with something stronger :D

And for anyone interested in rest of truck specs...

LN65 Double cab
35x12.5 Creeper Crawlers
15x10 Black spokes
2 inch lift leaves
extended shackles
2 inch body lift
Rancho 9 way adjustys
LSD in rear
TJM front bar
Safari Snorkle
Skyline seats
Boost, Oil press, Water temp and Pyro gauges
Lightened Cro-Moly flywheel
Brass button clutch
LN130 Gearbox
1 Piece rear driveshaft

And the best bit.... REG WOF CERT RUC!!!

That's a post-turbo EGT measurement right? Sure your probe is long enough to get the actual gas temp?

With 25psi you'll be pulling over 300C difference between pre and post turbo temps. The more boost you run the bigger the difference.

no intercooler?

@ 25psi most of that will be generated from heat rather than air flow. inlet temps must be huge. a little suprised you havn't burnt a piston out due to excesive inlet temps especially if injection timing isn't retarded.
most people that i've seen running boost over 15psi find they get more power by reducing the boost down.

injection is near enough to tdc...
And its done prob 20,000 km like that, one turbo bent a shaft and that was the only issue ive had
Intercooler in next on the list
I have digital boost controller and found that turning boost down makes EGTs skyrocket!!

Hi there Andy its a 4 Terrain clutch Retail is about $900 think i payed about $450 trade price from Repco, I wouldnt reccomend one at all it's been bordering on slipping since day one, if i drop the clutch 3rd low in some mud etc it just slips. A friend has one behind a turbo 5L on Cro Moly flywheel as well and his is the same :( not very impressed wonder if anyone does a twin or triple plate for L series engine?

So im guessing I should wind the boost down then? I am controlling the boost with the fuel and not running any form of wastegate, is this a good idea? I figure that controlling the boost this way is better for the engine rather than having for example enough fuel for 25psi boost but regulating it with a wastegate to 15psi? In my opinion that would leave me with 10psi worth of unburnt fuel creating excess EGT and black smoke?
I am planning on installing a front mounted intercooler but for obvious reasons that wont come into effect until ive done a few KM's on the open road. Someone please point me in the right direction I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but for a 22 year old i have done 7 years as a mechanic so have a rough idea but all the diesel modification i have done is self taught (or guessed haha)

i would wind the boost down and the fuel to match.
it would be very interesting to see what inlet temps you have tho.

however one small thought.......have you checked to see if the boost gauge is reading correctly?

Yea boost gauge is definately correct my EBC has digital display which is same as the manual boost gauge, wouldnt have a clue what inlet temps are.
Should i lower the boost with wastegate or by decreasing fuel? Anyone got any pros or cons with this?

Both, but you need to shift your EGT probe to the exhaust manifold to get a reading that's worth having.
Then wind the boost down to a level the engine will live at and wind the fuel down till your EGT's are safe.

Ok so i should control boost with my fuel and with wastegate?
Like I said earlier ute has done approx 20,000km like this and been reliable ive towed cars from one end of the country to the other and all sorts...
Anyone got any suggestions on a better turbo to suit?
Something that will run 20psi plus without creating huge inlet temps?

wind the fuel back first, then use the wastegate to control boost.
15psi + intercooler should do it nicly.
