cherokee dana 35 rear and 30 front. 3.07 stock ratio (or one of the stock ratios)... hang on ill get one of me books to go through them.

no such thing as a cheap SYE... well i suppose its relative..... About 1k from Justjeep on TM, includes driveshaft.

RJ has my Bible which includes all the guff on models/years/relevant diffs.

theres a 3.07, and a 3.73 as stock "i think" in the cherokees here. overseas there were other variances too.... wont know until i have some refeence material, however google "Cherokee diff ratios" and im sure youll find something.

This one has been regeared per the ad. But it may still have the Dana 35c in the rear, which is asking for trouble if locked and running 35" tyres. Export TJs (NZ new) came with Dana 44 in the rear, which is whats desired / upgraded to.

6-8" of lift will have serious implications on the steering geometry, just be careful about how it drives. If not done properly, it will give you trouble in the long run.

As for SYE, I imported mine directly from the US (JB Conversion Super Shorty with a matching driveshaft by Tom Wood). It was just shy of $1k. If you can't do the labour yourself, add a few ponies there.

Have you tried back seats of an XJ? Not much more room than a small car. It does have a bigger boot though.

As for Rusty's, well I have read mixed reviews about his product and service. That XJ on his website is apparently not running his gear (I read that one of the US forums - the owner identified it).

I would say, drive a couple of lifted XJs and see where you want to go with it.

The dana diffs are not perculiar to Jeep. They can be found in all sorts of vehicles.

TJ, were there NZ new XJ's? I though all XJ's were imported.

I believe Isuzu Bighorn have Dana 44 in the rear as well. So under a Mu is definitely possible. Dana Spicer is a separate company that is a supplier to many many auto makers (think u-joints and other driveline components).

I don't think XJs came new in NZ either. But you can take a TJ Dana 44 and put it under an XJ. You will of course will have to do something about coil (TJ) versus leaf springs (XJ). May be you can source a YJ rear Dana 44 (unlikely in NZ) with leaf spring set-up.

I personally can't say anything about Rusty's as I have not dealt with them. Do a bit of searching on www.jeepforum.com. Some of their products are good, some may need some refinement.

Try these websites for all you want to know about an XJ:

http://jeephorizons.com/tech/xjstockspecs.html

http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/ probably one of the best XJ websites. He is actually in Australia.

Certainly possible, particularly when Isuzu / Honda / GM were using interchangable parts in the US market in the 90s.

Here is an interesting discussion:
