FJ40 stuck in 4WD
Hi - for some reason my transfer case is stuck in 4WD. I have pulled the selector apart and it seems to need about an extra 1mm travel to disengage the front shaft. The selector fork appears straight but wondering if anyone has come across something similar to this. Is it possible for the front drive spline to move back? It appears to have a new rumble when driven but I don't normally drive on the road in 4WD. Cheers Stefen
hi,
i would check the shift links and bushes to make sure its not a external problem, the extra noise is probably just front shaft vibration, they not usually that well ballanced.
hope youve taken the hubs out to effectivly put it in rear drive again?
the only way i think the gear can move is if the nut in the centre of the driveshaft flange has loosened and let the shaft slip in the bearing.
only guessing though

;-p
im at a loss on that one sorry mate, the only problem i have had with mine is its sometimes hard to get back into 2wd after being 4x4ing,so the old back up and shift transfer lever back into 2wd as its rolling backwards trick and its sweet.
have you had the front housing(where the driveshaft comes out) off the transfer case to check the workings of it to make sure the slip spline is ok? thats about all i can suggest, maybe a bit worn on the end making it stick ??? maybe.... just guessing.
let us know how you get on.

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!

problem solved
Thanks for your replies.. and I found the answer on one of the forum links posted by 'muddy'. The problem was that the 4WD/2WD collar that slides along the spline was in around the wrong way. This is a replacement vehicle (after the last one was stolen) and obviously someone had been playing and not put the selector collar in around the correct way. This was my first trip around the southern coast with the new toy. Thanks again for your help as everything seems spot on. Happy 4WDing...
