5M-GE Issue

Hi, Have an issue with my Lux. Was heading away on sat and heard a tapping noise start in my engine.
Stopped and listened to it and it appears to have a little man inside hitting it with a hammer.
Has anyone else out there had a similar issue with a 5M?
If it is as terminal as it sounds (i'm thinkin it's mains or bigends) does anyone have a good second hand engine for sale?
Failing this, are these engines easy to repair?
I made it back to Christchurch but need to fix my truck!

i think it is common ish.. when they run dry due to sump design (cars are not designed to go on the sort of angles that we do)

Simple fix. Whip the sump off and you can get all the bearing shells out and replaced without removing the engine (assuming you have a beam axle)

and assuming there is no crank or rod damage

Starting to feel better about my tapping noise.
Yeah, got a beam axle, not sure they knew about IFS in 82 when they made my Ute?
So off with the sump it is and I'l have a look to see how bad it is.
Had nothing to do for Easter anyway.
Always keen to have a chat with any locals with similar mods.

my guess is check no6 big end as it is the furtherest away from the oil feed and is usually the one to go

number 2 and 4 were the ones that always went in my motors , simple fix as rok said throw in some berrings and it should stop the noise , its also a good idea to put in the mid bowl sump and pump as it holds more oil and leaves the motor more lubed on angles , also i ran a bottle of morleys engine stablizer in my old 5m's

I have midbowl sump that has been extended right back to the bell housing and extended the oil pick up right to the back and located it in a gated tank, holds nearly 9 litres and have not lost oil pressure yet
