Surf Reversing issues..

Post by loryda »

Hi Guys

Ive got a 87 IFS surf and just got back from the boat ramp, while i was there chucking it into reverse it seemed as if a rear brake was stuck, thinking it was (and knowing the new pads still need to be adjusted) i kept going and got the trailer in place.

When i got the boat on and went to take her out it again seemed as if the brake was stuck (make sure handbrake isnt on  ) with people waiting i just gave her abit of undies and hauled it out but still seemed like a drum was stuck or something, by the time it got to the carpark it had come free and everything was all good.

But when i got it home and reversed down the driveway i got about 30 meters before it once again bound up. Stopped this time and took a look, brakes didn't seem to be on, put it in first went forward no problem, checked the hubs weren't locked, nope, reverse again, bound up pretty much straight away, forwards sweet again, reverse nope.. hrmmm.

Mate parked it up blocking the other cars  and i came inside to have a coffee and a think, only thing i can think is the diff though??

I'm still having my Coffee and a think but if anyone's got any superior knowledge of these things before i pull things apart it would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers
Alex.

jack the rear of the truck up , put on jack stands , take the wheels off, take the brake drums off and have a look.

It the only way to know whats going on in their. not very hard either. Sounds like the brakes haven't been re-assembled properly or completely?

Hi UBZ, about to do just that :D its strange, shes been fine on the brakes for the last 500kms since they were done, need to be adjusted slightly but have now worn them in enough to do this.

Will jack her up and take a look.

mine does this, kind of
only when its parked up, with hand brake on, for minumim few days, when i go to take off from where its been parked the handbrake is locked on, just need to give it a bita gas to free the handbrake, thats it though, its due to the shit build up inside the drum, and they are due for a service

Sweeeeeet

Took the hubs off, adjusted the drums, checked everything else was sweet, hubs back on, reverse no problems, wheels back on, off the axle stands and off for a test thrash. (looks like pad was just getting caught up, odd only in reverse but..)

End result = all good
