gidday guys,

i might be joining the mitsi fraturnity real soon :D. a mate has a 1989 3.0 v6 lwb paj that im looking at buying.

does it seem a good price for the truck? its had king springs (or similar) fitted at the rear (coily) monroe front shocks, new exhaust, cam belt, waterpump, regular servicing (lots of receipts), cb, newish 31' muds on new white spokes, no bog or rust on the body, everything appears to work etc etc.

any advice greatly appreciated

cheers
weemsy :P

I paid $1400 for my 88 2.5TD with 174 000 Km's It was bog stock when i bought it about 6 months ago so the price is around the ball park for that model Paj, they are good wagons ,wholely underated by most 4x4'ers .. even better with the V6, cant comment on the mech's of the head as mines a Diesel but everything else seems to be able to be fixed with a large hammer and /or expressive use of colourful adjectives :D

What makes you think it is a valve guide? Is it jsut a bit smokey?

Generally a prtty robust motor but they do get smokey from valve stem's which can be fixed pretty simply on this motor with the heads in place.

gidday guys, cheers for the responses.

the guy im buying it off has done the stem seals as he thought thats all it was. it has a tick-ticking noise, smokes after sitting idling for a while, has a slight mis-fire when hot and is down on compression slightly on no.6. :(

nah, not really. just sounds like a hydraulic tappett ticking away. it doesnt get louder when revving or when hot or cold :? just a constant, quiet tick.

oh, and it occasionally stalls, such as when i stopped for the lights tonight. just as i pulled up the engine revs went so slowly it stalled. it started straight away, but i think the tick-over is very slow anyway, might just need tweaking up a few rpm? what do they usually idle at?

cheers

what is the idle usually when warm? mine idles at 1000rpm when cold, then drops to 500rpm and less when warm and occasionally stalls.

also, will i be able to adjust the 'warm' idle speed, i.e. maybe vacuum pipes or an idle control sticking or not working?

cheers

Idle stepper motor is playing up, very common problem. SHould idle about 700, 750 ish and up over 1000 when you turn the steering wheel or turn the a\c on.

THe stepper motor is under the throttle body and gets gunked up, particually on an older motor as the crank return blow by thingie is just there and so an oil mist gets into things and gunks them up. Can be cleaned with carbie cleaner or replaced.
