80 Series auto rebuild

Okay just getting a bit of an idea on what a rebuild of an 80 series auto would cost to rebuild. Seen one I like the look of but it has dropped 2 gear, was rebuilt and then lost 2nd so was wondering how much am I looking (ballpark here)? Before I make an offer thought I'd throw it out there for some ideas.

I know it hasnt got all the fruit (lockers etc) but what is the general concensus for a daily driver and a towing wagon that will not be used offroad (Yeah right - tui moment there)?

Fark at $8500 with a buggered gearbox I dont think so

They reckon they imported it at 62k and his wife used it to taxi their kids around and now its at 543k.... fark thats a lot of running the kids to school and back?

Agreed.. 8500 is too much for something with 543000 known kms on the clock with a knackered gearbox.
There was agreed one one in nelson only last week (on trademe) with only 200 odd k's on it 4.2 diesel, fully functional.. Best to not buy a problem. One went at turners auckland for 8 grand that had an ok report about two weeks ago.

540000 kms doing mostly school runs?? Wheres the school? invercargill?

Thats what I was thinking but maybe I could get a bargain. More likely a little more of a head ache than I need.

Will keep looking for a runner I think. How many Kms is too many in these things?

have seen too many autos killed from towing

there are ways to improve them to stop them getting toasted, but if you can find a manual one, then it will be better.

if you want auto then find a 24 valve one

there will be folks that come on here and say a 12 valve auto is fine, so listen to what they have to say and then talk to someone like jungle who has changed from auto to manual for a reason

then you will have to make up your own mind

my dads 80 series ended up being rebuilt 3 times due to it dropping gears, it turned out it was the shifter solenoids or something like that, it now has new ones and it works mint.

Beginning to wonder if they made a manual one (none I could find on T Me were).

I assume the auto requires an additional oil cooler to help when towing? Might just go with what ever I can find at the right price and that seems like it will be an auto at this point.

There are manuals kicking around, I've got one - Skids got one.

They aren't as common as the autos so you might be waiting awhile.

What sort of towing would you be doing? Towing your Suzi?

My olds had an auto cruiser. Towing large horse float.Large oil cooler, It killed the auto in no time.

did a manual conversion with a rebuilt manual box from lineside.
It goes bloody well now, Heaps more power, better to drive. Tows verry verry verry well.

If you have to get an Auto, you MUST fit a BIG cooler on it, and a temp gauge. That way you can monitor what the tran's is doing and drive accordingly.

IF i'm taking on a steep hill, i will lock the tran's into second, and let the engine rev at about half throttle, and the temp stays at a steady 80 degree's the whole time. Sits at about 60k/h with approx 2.5t load on the back.

If i leave it in drive, it grind's away in 3rd and the temp rise's quickly.

I think you just need to drive them correctly. You wouldn't make your manual labour away up a hill in a high gear would you????

Go the manual for the dedicated tow bus, go the Auto for the good all-rounder, as the manual box is a big heavy box, much like that of a Safari, if you have ever driven on of those around town, or even a light truck, you will know what i mean!!!!

How do the Nissan auto's compare?

Funny how nissans seem hard to find in Auto but 80 Series cruisers are hard to find in a manual. Its a conspiracy I tells ya.

Much that same as the 80 series.

Just that the safari's lean more towards the work horse side of the luxury 4x4 market, and the 80 series leans more to the luxury side. The result being a manual is more popular in a work horse, and an auto is more popular in a luxuary touring package.

If you go for the Safari auto, get the manual lock up mod done. Muzza has done this and said the difference is very noticable and make them much nicer to drive
