pros and cons of spring over ????

Need more ground clearance and thought about two options,
option one :
spring over using standard springs and long travel shocks,
will use samuri diffs as have all the goodies already in there.

option two
coil conversion as per James zuk in Nelson but also using Samuri diffs
6 inch kit, both to run 33`s

still wish to have it wof and main use will be club trips, winch challenges
and general hard fun.

truck is pretty we set up, but this is the problem area.
has 2 inch body lift and 2 inch spring lift, but spring sag after most trips,
has H/D spring already,

any advise would be appricated

cheers Bob

biggest con in my eyes would be high + narrow = very tippy. If you are thinking of putting in that sort of work why not consider going to hilux diffs for width?

Losse the body lift and cut the guard to fit tires.

From what I have seen and read, spring over on a Zuk without an incease in track width = tippy POS.
Especially with a 2" body lift. Maybe with Shagged stock springs it would work.

Why do you need more clearance?. A Zuk on 31's should have more clearance than a lux on 33's
I like the look ofthe RR coil kit ,but looks like it lifts the truck up real high as well. And alot of $$$

There is a good thread in the outers bible about SPOA vs SPUA

I'd spring over if I was fitting lux or wider axles but not std - TOO TIPPY, especially with a body lift.

have measured hilux diffs and would not gain a lot more width, this is the samuri model,
axles 2 inch wider that 413 and rim have been re located to max with centres cut out and re welded.
not to fussed on price of Rocky road kit, as will be a lot cheaper that replacing springs, and the odd shock.

For comparison i just measured mine which is 33 12.5 r15s on 15 x 8 and hilux axles and the wheel sticks out a little over 200mm per side from the gaurd. (measured of the flat gaurd not the flare)

I have coiled mine on hilux axles but to help with height rather than body lift I have done a big gaurd cut. I lifted the inner gaurd as far as I could (it is hard under the top of the gaurd). To get 33s and keep stockish bump stop the axle needs to go forward a bit to clear the firewall and then the head light bucket needs to come out to. I have cut out the bottom of the front edge of the gaurd to. This has allowed a bump stop that is no lower then stock.

Will post some pics at some point.

As far as your actual question...... I found the Zuk tippy and narrow. (that was an old narrow track one) with next to no lift.

After having a soa zuk I would do a coil sprung conversion next time.
RR kit unfortunately very pricey but would be the way to go.

well my opinion is go coily keep low as possible, i have a stock zuke my m8 has a zuke with 2inch lifted springs and longer shackles went for a trip on weekend playing follow the leader and i went first he came next and he went for a little role down the hill while i kept goin i didnt feel tippy atall and thats only 2inch lift difference. soa is about 4inch. i have just put hilux axles in my zuke with soa but my wheelbase will be 200mm wider.
cheers

Remove the body lift , fit standard springs soa and save the coin for other goodies . IMHO 6 inches of lift in springs will make for a nice flexy truck but it will have a fair bit of body roll . For rock crawling thats probably ok but if you are going to winch comp it you tend to be rushing things and I think it would be more tippy on coils .

I put my old 413 on coils and it was great but it was at standard ride height and had no more flex than the leaves , it was set up that way as thats how I wanted it .
If you soa now and a few years down the track need new axles , lux will go in easily . If its a custom coil setup there will be more work . The body will only sit an inch higher than the way it is now so it will not look like much change . With the sammy axles and wheels with a reasonable offset it should be fine .

Buy the weld on perches that sit on the old spring pads , I would not recomend a bent drag link . Good time to fit power steering so get a drop link , look for one off a toyota townace van , rumor has it they have a nice drop in them and fit either the toyota or vitara box . That and te high steer and you should be sweet

Just go with what you have got , a 2 inch drop arm with a 5 inch overall lift is like a 3 inch lift with no steering mods . People run 2 inch lift all the time with no mods so i would have thought a 3" would not be too much worse . Could look into using Merc arms on the brake calipers , its an option but not sure if I would go that way .

I was searching ebay the other day for a lhd steering box and a few of the kits now state they will fit left or rh drive .
