Boggling banging noise coming from front susp

Post by xorph »

Im having quite a headache figuring out what is wrong on my 70 series.

when turning the wheels on the road it frequently makes a loud and high pitched bang noise.

usually when I start hearing clunk noises from front it is a tierod end and you can visually see the culprit rod end suddenly move if you get your friend to play with the steering wheel.

This time I cannot see anything move. I was lying underneath the truck for an hour while my friend wrestled with the steering wheel trying to see where the bang noise is. Now Ive broken my friend...

The noise seems to be coming from INSIDE the knuckles or diff housing !?
and it happens at both ends!

What have I done??

I locked the hubs and played around spinning the wheels. cv joints appear to still work fine and no signs of damage.
Still makes the bang noise with hubs unlocked.

spring packs

maybe

pull the springs out and strip them and apply a coat of never sieze or a bit of grease inbetween the leaves then reassemble and try it again

also check your knuckle bolts are tight (you probably did that allready but just in case)
If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!

very good ideas, leaf bracket nuts were a bit loose so I grunted them all up but no joy :( they dont seem to be moving either and the bang doesnt seem to be coming from them. Ideally Id take them to bits and oil them but the threads on the bottom of the Ubolts are all buggered and it would mean replacing them.
Im going mad, Im now convinced its coming from inside the housing so Im thinking about taking a whole knuckle to bits.
Its quite a bang that it makes, and the whole car shakes a bit.

Does anyone know what angle the wheels are supposed to turn to? I have a feeling the limit stops are a bit unadjusted and this may have wrecked something inside the knuckles which is now binding.

Have you checked your shackle bushes, they usually clunk and bang a bit when their worn especially turning when the load shifts from one side of the vehicle to the other?

I cant beleive it! It actually is the springs! Wopass youre a genius!
I stand corrected. you can feel the spring pack pivot slightly right when it goes bang.
Wierd, it started happening just after I put the alloy motor in. maybe taking 250kg off the front has allowed the spring pack to unload a bit and pivot about the centre easier. I know it gained an inch of lift too :)
