What did you do to your Jeep today?

Post by TJ »

Taking an idea from other overseas forums, I am starting this thread as an inspiration for all of us doing mods, maintenance, or repairs to our Jeeps. It also keeps Jeep related knowledge easily available in one place for newby Jeep owners.

So today I replaced:

- the oem steering stabiliser with Rubicon Express one (painted black)
- rubber boot on the tie rod end on draglink at the pitman arm end
- rubber boot on the tie rod end on draglink at the steering knuckle end

No more grease / oil dripping onto the front steering components. No more worries about mud/sand destroying the the tie rod ends (i.e. I can go offroad again).

I got about 75% of the way through fitting my UHF CB. I just have to connect the power wires and tidy up the wire to the remote fascia and it's done.

Two weeks ago I cut the right front fender, raising the plastic flare extension by about 45 mm, also trimmed the bottom edge of the fender that is in behind the plastic end cap of the bumper, photos would show it better, but no batteries at the mo'.

Today I started on the left front fender, removed the bumper and cut the bottom off of the fender to match. During the week I hope to enlarge the fender on the left to match.

Makes way for bigger tyres in the future - slowly, bit by bit.

Drew some lines on the fenders ready for the cut on tuesday.

Oh, and driving back from Cambridge this arvo had my Track bar fall out.... thats right.... the bottom bolt came right on out and the bar duely slid out. Tightened both ends last weekend so goes to show that giving the truck the once over after a day in the mud is imperative.... complacency could have had a very tragic result.

Unless you own that vehicle, I would appreciate your keeping this thread to on-topic. Humour is good, but the intention of this thread to keep it technical. If that vehicle is your handy work, then please ellaborate on the technicalities of achieving such a feast.

I finished my radio install on Saturday.

Also on Saturday I retired the XJ from active service as a DD. It's not going anywhere (almost literally in fact); I get a free park in Wellington CBD from work and I can get there faster and cheaper than the train provided I drive a1990 Mitsi Mirage NA diesel. Jeez it's slow; it makes the Wrangler (that desperately needs to be regeared even for its 31s) feel fast. Then again it seems to be returning 7.2l/100km using the accelerator like an on/off switch :D

The XJ will now be for weekend duties that involve load carrying or pulling primarily - and maybe the trip to work if the weather demands 4wd, though I'll probably use the TJ in that case.

7/5/9: Finished making motor mount lift blocks and fitted them.
Fitted JKS 1.25inch body lift courtesy of Wooders Garage, NSW.

(need to pack the front springs back up about 15mm, seems the Flat Fenders are a bit heavier than i thought, gee, some more work to do on the Jeep on Saturday!!!!)

9/5/9:

Popped the 15mm spring spacers in the front to level it up, and re-aligned the front diff. Noted that even after the last wheel alignment that it was toe-ing out bigtime. Pulled out the trusty tape measure and it was out by 30mm, so remedied it by way of a back-yard wheel alignment.

Also noted that the front lower control arm castor correction bolt on the left was loose, and not just a little loose. Something wrong there, when the nut is tightened to the bolt she tightens right up, but the bolt can still rotate, hence cocking up the castor. Washers are where theyre supposed to be, its got me buggered.

Didnt even get to looking at the skid plate today.

Went up Maratoto for the clean up / maintenance day. New water pump has helped with the oil temperature staying cooler (though might be the weather too).

Ordered new motor mounts from Brown Dog (www.browndogindustries.com). Trying to track down last of the vibrations in my steering. Steering stabliser had helped a lot in reducing them. I don't have a wobble, its just a vibration feel (annoying at best).

10/5/9: Painted the rear flares in underseal... just for something to do. Picked up the skid plate, picked up the box section, thought about taking the stock plate off and marking up the holes etc, got a case of the "couldnt be arsed"'s and put them back

Picked up my 96 limited on Thursday, ripped the springs outa my old one yesterday and they're being re set for an extra 60mm this week. Now I just need to get enough together for some shocks and mud tyres, still might give her a go up Thompsons this weekend :P

Will do, my mate in his swb patrol and a few other mates with dirt bikes will be going aswell so should be a good day out. I've only got A/Ts at the mo but they did pretty good last time I was up there (August 08), my main problem was ground clearance. Cheers.

Do we want to make a jeep trip out of this?. If I can get the steering wheel sorted, air bags and get the relocation bracket in and with all this wet weather we are getting, well who knows! :D
