Flat-fendering the TJ

Thought i may as well pop up some pics of the flat-fender mod.

I must acknowledge one of the other Jeepers for the inspiration (and for letting me steal his templates) for doing this. I am merely following along anothers footsteps, so cannot take credit for being the genius behind the thinking.

After wiping my guards out a few weeks ago, and subsequently getting prices for repacement guards, both new and 2nd hand, i figured that seeing as how something had to be dont to repair the damage, that i may as well go whole hog and give it the FF. So, I'm not just being "posey", there was a practical reason for doing this.
Initially i went to ta local engineers to scam some tube and steel, and ended u getting them to bend everything up for me too, couldnt see the point me me swearing and cursing and throwing shit about, when there were experts who could do it for me, and for a very reasonable price too.

Theres no side on views for a reason..... ermm..... the angles didnt quite work out on the vertical plane, so its a work in progress at the mo, bit more bending, bit more hammering and she'll be right. Theres still a gussetted bracket for the front to make and LEDs to get for the indicators too, hopefully by Sunday it will be set to go.

they should look good once they are painted and as he has already smashed the guards he had, I believe that the new ones will take a pounding against the banks alot easier.

'Cause I wanted to.

Something sturdy to put the tools on while fixing shit.

UPDATE: Got them back from the engineers where they corrected the angle a certain degree, but still not 100%. However, they're both now 25mm narrower and are fitting a heap better. Still some boogie-ing up to do, and it certainly wont pass close scrutiny on the perfection stakes.... but black paint and black silicone on the joins, i reckon it will come up ok-ish.

Looks really nice. You know you will have to do the rear ones to match the front now!!!! When the template is sorted, I reckon you can sell copies of them.

Loving your work.

How strong is the bit of stock fender that you're keeping? I only ask because the aftermarket oned all seem to be complete replacements so I had originally assumed that was for strength (as having to make brackets for all the mundungus that attaches inside them isn't easy), but now I'm guessing not.

Might be interested in some of those templates for mine if you perfect them - someone once told me they had never had panel damage to persuade me to use my TJ rather than my XJ off-road, and now I'm thinking I may not trust that advice

The stock ones have been left there to still take the innner guard (its double lined), and to bolt the new ones to... hang on, that doesnt sound right. Theres going to be a bracket at the front that uses the original mounting holes, another brackety platey thing at the rear using the original hole, and under the bonnet line there will be a couple of bolts through the new, and whats left of the old, fender.

there actually wasnt a lot wrong with the templates, its how they were applied that was the issue.

Hey fella. Looking very flash. So now you have all that room under the guards should we be expecting to see some 35's under there soon?

Nice job, they look good 8) and nice and strong..... but maybe too strong and it'll be the inner guards buckling now instead of the fenders when you bounce off banks. Side bars like DB's would help but probably dont keep with that jeep look

1) I hear what your saying, but the dude i copied these off came down the same water rut as i did when busting my guards and his guards literally sliced through the bank. If we were doing rock-work, then i'd be a bit worried, but with what we do in the terrain were in, i "hope" it wont be a problem.

2) DB's aint a Jeep :P :P :P :P :P :P     [still wanna swap donks with him though]
