question about gearbox

hey guys i bought a gearbox from a guy on here and was told it was out of a yn60 so same gearbox as what blew up in my truck but it only seems to have 4 gears and gearing seems wrong i didnt know you could even get the surf or hilux 4x4 boxes in 4 speed besides maybe the old old old hilux ones but i thought they were all in the 2wds. I can loosen the wheels in reverse but in first have trouble getting going and lacks power in the rest of the gears. what are your guys thought on it? is it the wrong gearbox? i had to put the gear levers in so have i put it in wrong or something? can i find the code for the gearbox on it somewhere cause ive had a basic look and dont see it anywhere.
any help would be great.
also am looking for a tps to check if mine is bad. pics of it here.

id say you have brought a 4speed box they were common in the early y/ln6# serries
if its selecting the 5 gears it has the leavers located (make sure its in its natural possition and not sticking out on some odd angle

yeah i would say it is a 4 speed then bugger that sucks. 200 gone to waist. grr and its not like i can use it either as its got to be geared wrong since i can get the wheels spining in reverse but lags when launching. back to square one finiding a gearbox.

ive got one but im in greymouth so freight would be a killer
youd need the diffs that the box came out of, but 4sps suck!

Are you sure the diesel G52 box I have is not suitable?

yeah the gearing in first and second are different. think that is what has happen with the one i have. think it is acually for the diesel not the 3y which is why it lags when launching and everything. but if you dont mind me borrowing to try it out to see if it is the write one i could do that but its up to you.
i am watching one that a guy bought for his 3y ute from a wrecker its at 51 reserve met but is in tauranga so would have to go get it. said it has ln61 wrote on the top by wrecker pretty sure the ifs petrol surfs were called a ln61 as well.

Yn is petrol
Ln is diesel
there is a thread on here somewhere that shows the different gearbox gearing ratios but I can't find it.

so in otherwords i am right they are different even if they are both g52's so this gearbox is wrong as well cause it is a ln61
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =215493669this is becoming a pain in the ars
question for ya smurf if i bought a 3y 2wd could i take it and my 4x4 one and change parts around to get a good 4wd box?

My understanding from just having searched the net a bit, is that there is no difference in gearing between a 5 speed petrol box and a 5 speed diesel one, the difference is in the diff gearing. Diesels having lower ratio diffs
there is a difference in gearing between a G52 and W56 though.
I replaced the G52 in my YN60 with a diesel W56, just had to swap the bellhousings over, and move the hole in the trans tunnel back 70mm ish

ok sweet cheers for that. might keep an ey on this box in tauranga maybe i can pic it up cheep since i really cant spend much on one since i spent the 200 on this one and doubt anyone wants to buy it as its 4 speed. cheers for the help.
smurf any idea why my motor seems to lag when in launching in first but can spin my wheels in reverse?

Reverse in your 4 speed may be a lower ratio than first gear giving you a bit more power to spin your wheels in reverse?? Just a guess

yeah fair enough ill get this tps from muddy and put that in and get it set right and then tweek and tune it some more and get a 5 speed see what happens. guess thats the best i can do. alsao have to find a short cause i keep blowing the efi breaker under the driver kick well and it kills the engine and have to go down and reset it. sucks. think i know what it is tho.
cheers guys

list of first gear ratios for hilux
Hilux and 4Runner/Surf Transmissions
L43 4 speed 79 - 80 3.67
L45 4 speed 81 - 82 3.93
L50 5 speed 81 - 82 3.93
L52 5 speed 83 3.93
G52 & G54 5 speed 84 - 88 (Carb) 3.93
W56 5 speed 85 - 95 (EFI) 3.95
R151F 5 speed 86 - 87 (turbo only) 4.31
G58 5 speed 89 - 95 3.93
R150F (6 cyl) 5 speed 88+ 3.83
Unless the 4 speed you got is the really early one it should be fine. even the early one is prob not different enough to make a difference unless you have gone from the R151F (4.31 first) to the L43 (3.67 first). Reverse is likely to be lower hence you can start in reverse.
Given you are blowing the EFI breaker and think he TPS is suspect I would be sorting these before spending more on a gearbox. (although you will lose top end/cruise comfort without 5th)
I know none of this helps find the actual problem but it sounds to me like the ECU is going into limp mode (restricted power and revs) due to lack of a signal from a required sensor. From your other post it sounds like you have sorted that to the TPS. Get that sorted and go form there would be my advice. (does it rev freely in neutral?)

in neutral she revs slow till about 3 3.5 then starts reving faster. muddy has a tps and is sending it to me so will put this in this week and hope it sorts it. i need a 5 speed anyways cause i use the truck mostly for roadies so in fifth quite often. thanks for the advice. good to know the diesel and petrol g52's are the same.

well got the truck running tuned and the gearbox is right but is 4 speed. think ill hang onto it for now tho cant be bothered spending 200 on a box and rip this one out and put another in. not to mention this 4 speed is very tight!!!!.
so got all 3ye stuff in and new gearbox in and car runs mint. starts so much easier and runs alot smoother!!
thanks for everyones help now i can see you all out on the track. just need some bars and mabye raise the rear up a little. but those will come now its time to rip it up!!
cheers
