Post by new2zukes »

well today i was welding some parts for my project and forgot to turn the gas on when i was welding one part, what happens to the weld if it has no gas? the pic below shows a weld that was done with gas and the other without i dont understand why they both look the same. can someone who knows a bit more about this please help. oh and i know my welding isnt the best so dont rub it in

you get a prous week weld

sometimes you can get 20 seconds of weld out of the torch if it still has a little line pressure
but generally i would have expected it to look even worse... hokey pokey stz

I take it you were mig welding. The big problem with mig welding is it can look good but has no penetration and therefore no strenght . Most times it will just splatter without the gas and bubble.

My guess is you are using gasless welding wire , hence the little difference with or without gas .
Gasless wire , proper term shielded wire . Has the coating on the outside that burns off creating an inert gas while welding etc etc .

Without gas on unshielded wire is very pitted and ugly . You will know when you come across it .

give the weld a grind.. it will be fill of little bubbles and have be very weak. but vvega says, if there was gas in the line you may have gotten away with it.

The backyard rumor mill says this is ment to help give better penetration , any truth to this ?

co2 gas and fluc cored wire, great looking welds, less splatter, can weld along, up, over head and down on the same settings, welds galv pipe like it is not galved, well the lincon wire can, down side is fumes like hell, and makes one hell of the dusty gritty floor area when doing alot of welds

hi just to clear things up a little im using a mig with gas welding wire and co2 gas, will try using gasless wire with gas as i have all that. the left weld had a little bit of a brown surface on it that was easy to scratch off (no gas) but i usually use my arc for anything over 3or4mm thanks all for your input. i should really take a coarse in welding as ive never been tought to weld.
