hi there.
My 2lt turbo diesel surf is missing on start up and smokes on idle, after heating up and idling for a wee wile or at lights it also blows out clouds of white smoke.
runs fine and doesn't blow white smoke wen driving for a wile, but city driving through lights and shite is quite inbarising wen you take of and leave this huge cloud of white smoke behind.
cheers

Usually you can see bubbles in the radiator with engine running and the cap off.

Take it to a mechanic and they will do a test on the water in the radiator. Not definitive but can help. I'm with the others, head or gasket, say farewell to about a grand.

are the glow plugs working?
also does it have the thermostat in it ? (often removed in a lame attempt to stop head cracking)
the other possibility's are slipped cam belt (injection timing is out) or faulty injection pump (no injection timing advancement).

it only misses on one cylinder tho. ive orderd some glow plugs so gonna change them and see how they go. the cambelt deffinatly needs to be changed so ill change that sucker too.
cheers
if it is a cracked head. ill just rip the 2.4 out. go with the 2.8. or go all out and put a 7mgte in it. .

diesel is so overrated especially if it is going to be used as a toy

Not necessarily a cracked head, and if it isn't using any water at all then it is most likely not.
My guess would be turbo oil seals. Oil is getting past the seals at idle because there is no manifold pressure. That explains your cloud of white smoke.
Missing on start up could be any number of things, most likely either glow plugs or the primer pump is farked allowing fuel to drain back into the tank over night.
I would check the compression and go from there.

or check the head breather isnt blocked, Gaza's 2LT blew smoke like a B##**#%H we thoght blown turbo but it was just the breather blocked and pressurising the oil out thru the turbo.....

there was a bit of oil sitting in the front of the turbo wen i took the intake piping stuff off does that mean anything?. .

got a catch can?
2lt's are well known for blowing lots of oil out the breather, it can make it hard to tell if the oil in the intake after the turbo is from leaking turbo or from breather.
typically if its turbo leaking oil the smoke is blue rather than white.

if its a turbo issue
blue smoke is from the intake side of the engine ...white is from the exhaust side
so if its white ... it will be comming from the ex side of the engine
reason it probably smokes at startup ... it pools in the snail .. then clears

i took the washes out of the turbo thingy and turned the diesel injector pump down to normal and it has seemed to have stopped it.
