1982 Hilux modification
1982 Hilux modification
Hi
My name is Bartosz from Poland ( Europe ) and I just bought my second Toyota hilux. Me and my father , we do compete in offroad/expedition marathons. After a year competing we found out that our Hilux ( http://hilux.dobrebopolskie.com/ - before the external roll cage ) was a bit to big for a typical polish offroad route - rather narrow and full of tight turns between trees. So we decided to buy a new one ( 1982 hilux ) http://www.hcfr.pl/fusion_images/photoalbum/486.jpg and we need to modify it , and here is the problem : Hilux is a rather rare car in Poland even in Europe, so there not many cars like it ( The 1982 Hilux is the only one in Poland !! ) and not many people know how to modify it , especially the suspension. We dont know anybody who did modify it, we want to get rid of the old suspension and get springs and ohlins shocks instead. Could any one help us? with photos or some technical help ??
we also wanna chenge the back of it witha pipe construction just like this one : http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/modules.php?set_albumName=Start-of-Coast-to-Coast-2005&id=Dsc03670&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_photo.php have yu got more photos of it ??

Gidday
I'm also doing up an 82 single cab... well it was when I started
see project lemon
I'm guessing by springs you mean coil springs
this is an option I haven't bothered with coils, leaf springs are easyer (for certification, legal crap
)
If you are plaining on lifting the syspension, you will have to do the steering as well. This is becouse the push pull steering "drag link" one from the drivers steering arm to the pitman arm, gets placed on an angle from the lift, and as your axle articulates it will cause bump steer and limit the steering, the comon solution for this is to replace the pitman arm or steering arm with an expensive aftermarket one to level out the draglink, or go over to X-over steering witch gives better steering at full articulation all you need to do is get hold of a hilux surf power steering box mount it in place of the old hilux one and flip a spare hilux drivers arm over the passangers and use another tierod to act as the new draglink or you can buy aftermarket highlift X-over steering arms that move the steering linkages up above the axle out of harms way
following from connans truck showing the cheaper option
with your steering sorted you can go nuts on the suspension... the most common mod for the front (here anyway) is to build up the front X member and to use the rear spring from your hilux with the load leaves removed and mount it in the front with extended length shackles
you reverse the springs, this moves your axle forward 80mm better entry angle and more clearance between firewall and tires
This gives a pretty mean twist on these springs
Have a look in this album (Tomsoffroad)for a coil rear convesion, it is to a surf but the lux is very similar and the front was done with a leaf swop
http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/modules.php?set_albumName=ThomsOffroad&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php
He soursed the radius arms from a Izusu but you could use Range Rover ones anything with coils
Hope this helps some
Cheers Reece

yeah as springs I've ment coil springs :]
We dont have to get any certification cause the car wont run on public roads ( only offroad ) so it doesn't have to be legal
we know we have to change the steering , we had the same problem when lifting our first Hilux ( 2.5 " body lift + 5 " suspension lift with longer shocks - our own project http://www.marcin.off-road4x4.pl/originaldn05mog/D7_Untitled_001.jpg ) and than we found one huge problem !! as you could see in most photos we mainly ride in deep mud (http://www.marcin.off-road4x4.pl/dn_original/PIC01857.JPG ,http://www.marcin.off-road4x4.pl/dn_original/PIC01846.JPG ) , and we need to change - move the steering bars above the ... ( not really sure - stiff bridge , please correct me
) did any one has it ??
are the prices on rocky-road.com on USD or what ??
De-ranged - where could I find "project lemon " ??
mike - we wanna buy the auto lockers but there ara so really expensive to buy them in Poland there are so rare !!
thanks for your help
When I get the updated photos on our single cab I'll show them asap
And I need one thing could you help me - how much an Arb Rear Diff Air Locker 7.5 " costs in NZ ??

yeah they are US currency.
works out so cheap for us. $700 NZ including shipping for two. At that price you cant afford not to have them.
goto the forums and then projects and scroll down till you see project lemon. Thats where it will be if it was entered in the correct forum.

Thanks for that site Mike I'll be using that
dun-know about using a lockrite up front tho...
could make the steering a bit of an issue!!
You'll need to go to High Lift X-Over steering, its what I'm doing to mine... I'll have some pics of the arms very soon... I've finially got back to working on the lemon again... just putting the front axle together today...
Cheers Reece

I have one up front and steering is fine. Just have to do a 3 point turn where some people can do it in one swoop, but just adds to the fun especially when it is a really steep turn. The benifits far outway small loss of steering.De-Ranged wrote:dun-know about using a lockrite up front tho... could make the steering a bit of an issue!!

Not sure what the set up is on one of the hiluxes in our club, but the horizontal bar between steering knuckles (sorry name iludes me) is run behind the axle. I think it was a high pinion 80 series diff head and the arm was modified slightly to clear but remains tucked up behind everything so not suseptible to damage through frontal impact. not sure of the knuckle set up either. Still in build stage at the moment so not sure how it will work but looks awesome.
