[quote="Sadam_Husain"], found a few bruises around one of the cross pins but other than that it looks ok
That is one area to watch on an ARB. The short pins on mine are flogged out and loose.
I put spacing shims in mine to take out the slack by the block in the middle of spider gears
Cheers Richard

it only happens when there is axle wrap and by the looks of the spring perches, that looks like what caused it

yeah TBH i didnt have my rear tramp bar on and the amount of axle tramp that i had probably didnt help as well as the abuse that i gave it the day before
my reasoning for the upgrade is that i would like to 1 run air lockers and bigger /more agressive tires at some stage
in my own mind there is not much point is spending a few g on lockers for diffs that i will probably have to change eventually anyways
dunno i know you dont like the idea of changing the hilux axels out .. and to be honest i don't either ...
but its either something stronger or i detune my engine and don't run larger tyres catch 22 i guess

on i side note
today i learnt that
electric 9" lockers need a long spline axle on the short side
that you cannot buy one of these off the shelf
and that a man down in welly will make one for 150 bucks inc (i couldnt make one for that inc heat treatment) and like jafa you need a hub plate to make it all work
also
that a rear diff bearing set is $490 retail(but who pays retail)
that the electric locker requires a hard shim set .. hasn't got the adjustable side plates
and that its bloody heavy to drop on your foot
i also learnt that the motors are fixable
and that actually fitting the axle to the truck takes 2 hours

and is impossible to do when your diff hoops are in auckland because you forgot to take them out of your flatmates car
man what a weekend

Been looking for a safari for manuel conversion and some spare parts last 2+ months.quite hard to find I can tell you,at a good price that is.I got this one in the end.

It has one of these on the front

one of these also,manuel trans

come with twins,which are both stuffed I'm told,but lots of spares(inj pump,injectors,etc)

best why to remove trans, just lift front up and slide sideways

By the time I draged it home owes me $1600 which is not to bad, manuel trans cost close to a grand by them self

The good news is my cruiser is back on four wheel after months on two (rear hub repairs).

So I had to take it for a drive
The bad news is I was getting too excited to soon... hit a brick wall...

hadn't bleed the brakes...

The good news is I was going about 2 kph and the brick wall is only about 4 mtrs from where I started from.
The bad news is it took a wee bit of paint off the wall.
The good news is the cruiser suffered nothing, just gained a bit of wall paint on the front bar
But the real bad news is I decided to see if any water had settled to the bottom of the diff while it was sitting and these fell out of the drain bung...

Looks like springs out of the lockrite! That will explain why it wasn't functioning properly to the end of the last outing. And may be why the locker seemed to jamb on which may be the reason why the axle studs shore off. But it doesn't explain why the locker looked faultless last time it played up and we pulled it to bits, which was only a short time ago...
Looks like the locker will be coming out.. again.

9 will be heaps stronger than an 8, thats the first 9" diff I've popped in 20 years and if you look at the pics of my spring perches you'll see how much my diff housing and pinion rotated before it sheared

Shot up Thompsons this arvo, got home at 830....
Two things to note.....
The right hand track heading to the summit NEEDS to be left the F##K alone.... or someone is going to get seriously hurt, or worse. It used to be left by many for the down track only. Seeing as how the left and centre tracks are getting "too hard" for some, the left track is copping a lot of use, and hence about half way up is breaking through adjacent to a gully and a drop to nowhere.
Three vehicles in the last two weeks have now been recovered from this very point trying to ascend, and if a decent is attempted, esp in the wet, tyres will drag to the left and potentially over the edge.
There isnt much stopping it from breaking away now. This is not a "maybe".... Shit WILL happen here... and it will not be "Good Shit"
Secondly..... I am utterly sick to death of punks in daddys 4x4 drinking piss and leaving their F#####G cans and bottles etc laying all over the place. Also, tonight we had some stoopid twat about 6 inches away from death cause it was cool to drift down the muddy hill 1/2 way up thommos, it got away and he ended up 1/4 over the edge.
Two trucks trying to winch him back onto the track, WITH two more trucks as anchors couldnt budge him. We got him out eventually, with his drunk/stoned mates looking on. At least they saved us the ignominy of trying to offer advise.
I think one of the occupant of the 4 trucks in that crew said "thanks".
did they have recovery gear? Did they have tow hooks? Did they have half a brain between them?
I'm pissed off.

I have broken 2 long shafts in my ARBs so with the damage on the carrier it would be a good idea to have a look.
The long pin is doweled at both ends so can't drop out
