Girl killed in freak accident

18th May 2009, 13:30 WST

A 13-year-old girl was killed near Kununurra yesterday after being struck by a four-wheel-drive roo-bar that was pulled off a bogged vehicle as it was being towed out of a creek bed.

Major Crash squad detectives are investigating the incident that took place in rugged bushland an hour’s drive west of Kununurra.

A police spokesperson said details of the incident were sketchy at this stage but it appeared the roo-bar had become dislodged from a Toyota Landcruiser driven by the girl’s father as the vehicle was being towed out of a creek bed by a Nissan Patrol 4WD.

The incident happened late yesterday afternoon.

The girl and her father were taking part in a Rotary Club 4WD event when their vehicle became bogged near Deception Range in the Kimberley.

The Nissan Patrol attached a snatch strap to the Landcruiser that pulled part of the roo-bar off the vehicle.

The snatch strap and part of the roo-bar are understood to have recoiled and hit the girl.

She was given first-aid at the scene and taken to Kununurra District Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

oof, thats a bit rough, wonder if they tied the strap around a non load bearing bit of bar, hence the bar breaking apart ?

chances are that if they were in a Rotary 4x4 event they would not have been 'experienced' 4wders so yeah like mentioned above may have had the strap around the bars. i have been coordinating/ marshaling on a few fundraiser trips and some of the things that people do/come up with/ suggest at certain situations is unbelievable.

accidents do happen, but that is why we do have rules or guidelines for such things as recoveries...

Sounds like a freak tragic accident alright, especially bad as it was a fun rasier event

At west coast easter tip this year, nuts nissan had his bullbar ripped off by simon in his lux,

Tell ya what, it was funny shit cause no1 got hurt, but had someone been standing in the wrong place it would have been ugly, The bullbar flew a good few meters from nuts nissan

everyone cheaks the tow hooks and the bolts that hold it but what about the rest of what its attached to, Nuts hook and bullbar and bin there a while but it eventually gave up,

Best thing to do is just not get stuck guys :) but seriously the important things are when your recovering a vechicle regardless of how simple and stright foreward it might be, make sure everyone knows whats happening and a standing well back

Heres some photos of nuts bullbar

Funny that, at easter trip down south this year, a towbar got ripped off a surf and it did collect someone. When it does happen, it is an ugly incident. Guy off to hospital, off work for a while. But lucky to be alive - if the bar had been a little higher...

Checking tow hooks and what they are fixed to is never a waste of time.

generally if you check a hook you check what its attached to as well, if it looks dodgy and a gentle strop won't budge the stuck vehicle then its time to start digging or getting a winch ready......
